ELECTRICAL DATA AND SETTINGS I 588-2.1 MW/60 Hz/Grid Standard

Suzlon 588-2.1 MW

3 5uzlon 588-2.1 MW

3.1 General

The Suzlon 588-2.1 MW turbine is a variable slip wind turbine with an electrical pitch system.
The generator system consists of an asynchronous generator with slip ring and variable rotor
resistor due to the SUZLON FLEXISUP SYSTEM (SFS). With 14 step capacitor banks, the
turbine is able to compensate the reactive power. The cut-in is performed by a "soft start"
module to minimize high inrush currents. Due to the pitch system it is not necessary to
motorize the turbine for starting.

3.2 Turbine Control

The turbine operates automatically with the SUZLON CONTROL SYSTEM (SCS). The SCS
carries out the following tasks:
Monitoring and supervision of the operation
Turbine protection I Grid protection
Turbine measurements - wind, temperature etc.
Controlling of cut-in via soft starter to rninirruze the inrush current
Controlling the blade angle to get optimum slip
Optimize the output to nominal value

3.3 Low Voltage Ride-Through Capability

The Suzlon 588-2.1 MW Grid Standard turbine has the performance of stay connected on the
grid during temporary grid disturbances. For that purpose the turbine is equipped with
advanced turbine control, adding a UPS (battery back-up panel) and new protection settings.
The UPS system will supply the turbine internals as turbine controller and components during
the "network" disturbance. The Suzlon 588-2.1 MW Gnd Standard is a basic version of LVRT
capability which has no extra reactive power support features during the fault period. Upon a
fault the SUZLON FLEXISUP SYSTEM (SFS) will use a "crowbar" to short circuit the generator
variable rotor system. The generator passes through the fault as a traditional induction
generator with improved control strategy.
The Suzlon S88- 2.1 MW Gnd Standard add-ons are:
1. UPS panel (Unlnterruptible power supply panel)
2. Extended main circuit breaker settings
3. New turbine controller settings
4. Fast pitching system
5. Advanced SUZLON FLEXISLIP SYSTEM

3.4 Earthing System

The SUZLON 588-2.1 MW is operated with a TN-C grid system.
The earthing and lightning protection system IS designed according to lEe 61400-24. The
general earthing busbar in the tower base is connected to the earthing system which has a
required resistance less than 10 Ohm but additionally national requirements have to be
taken into consideration. The earthing system is designed project specific to match the site
specific soil conditions and to fulfil national standards.

Operation Details

6 Operation Details

6.1 Soft Starter

To minimise the inrush current during cut-in of the generator a soft starter is used. This is a
combination of thyristor switches and a small controller, linked to the turbine control system.
When the generator speed has reached synchronous speed the thyristors connect the
generator to the grid by phase control to limit the current. A predefined ramp increases the
current up to nominal current. Phase and frequency of the generator stator are now the
same as the grid, the thyristors get bypassed and the turbine starts producing.
The following values have been measured on the 50 Hz prototype. It is estimated to have
almost the same current at the 60 Hz turbine but this has to be verified via soon starting
measurement. It depends on the wind speed when we will get the results of the
measurement.
Peak inrush current:

7.1 PSSjE modelling data

Suzlon Energy has developed a PSS/E model of the S88-2.1 MW including all turbine data
and settings.
The PSS/E mode! may be used to evaluate the network system stability or load flow cases as
required from the network operators or system planners. The PSS/E model can also be used
to find the optimal solution for a wind farm and hereto substation design.
The PSS/E model is available upon request and will be forwarded upon signing a
confidentiality agreement.
