The SHS Implementation
in the Philippines
Rationale:
qEnhancement of Philippine Basic education Program aligned to
International Standards.
qTIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study)
Philippines ranked 3 to the lowest in 2003.
qNAT (69.21% in 2006 – 45.21% in 2007 for Grade 6 students)
qNAT(47.40% in 2009 – 46.38% in 2010 for High School students)
qFurther explains this phenomenon is due to lack of skills like basic
problem solving and basic math skills and the graduates are too young
to enter labor-force.
qIncompetent Filipino high school graduates.

Reason for Inclusion of Research
Subject in SHS

qThis course is mandated to be included for the senior high school

curriculum since helps students practice critical thinking. According to Dr.
Ricardo E. Rotosa of the University of Science & technology of Southern
Philippines. Research is usually viewed as essential function. Constant
research should always come alive to further the research culture among
21st century teacher and students. Converting the drive to knowledge
conversion in to scientific investigation is a must using qualitative and
quantitative approaches. (Rotosa, 2017)

Tips in Creating Topics for SHS
Research
qTopics for research in senior high school doesn’t have to be very
huge.
qThe capacity of the students in terms of academic processing is
not yet fully developed.
qStart looking simple problem the see around the school vicinity,
since the place to conduct research is very important.
qConsider the timeframe of the students in working for the
research 5 months for qualitative research and another 10 months
for quantitative research.
qStudents in senior conducting research and selecting topic should
be fully supervised by research adviser and other experts in the
field.

“Case Study: The Use Of Spelling Placards As A
Tool For Vocabulary Enrichment Among Selected
Senior High School Students”
J. Jalata, SJ. Palado, AM. Maghirang, JK. Jandoquele, MB. Pedrena

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to find improvement on the spelling and vocabulary ability of grade 11 students
of UPHSD Calamba Campus. The researchers utilized the hybrid methodological technique that fuses elements of
experimental design with qualitative strategies to explore the enrichment of vocabulary among the students using
interview questionnaires. This were distributed to 30 grade 11 students from senior high school department. The
major conclusion of the study was that the spelling placards have helped the students to enriched vocabulary in
some ways such as refining the acquisition of the vocabulary skills of the students with the aid of this distinctive
characteristics of the words and providing additional knowledge for words and developing interaction between
learners. However, it is still lacking and inconsistent because the approach for learning is compulsory and would be
better if were permissive though the interaction between the learners gave freedom of learning for them.
