Chapter 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This part discusses the methodology that plays an important role in

implementing this research study. The details of the methodology are explained in

details in this chapter. The purpose of this study is to determine how Nature and

Nurture influence student’s course selection.

Research Design

In this study, descriptive method of research will be employed. As cited by

AECT Organization (2017), Descriptive research does not fit neatly into the definition

of either quantitative or qualitative research methodologies, but instead it can utilize

elements of both, often within the same study. In a descriptive research design, it is

solely interested in describing the situation or case under the research study. It is a

theory-based research design which is created by gathering, analyzing and

presenting collected data. By implementing an in-depth research design such as this,

a researcher can provide insights into the why and how of research.

Respondents of the Study

The respondents of this study are Bachelor of Science in Office

Administration students from 1st year to 4th year of Laguna State Polytechnic

University – Santa Cruz Campus in Santa Cruz, Laguna.

Population and Sampling Technique

Purposive sampling (also known as judgment, selective or subjective

sampling), a sampling technique in which researcher relies on his or her own

judgment when choosing members of population to participate in the study.

The purposive sampling will be used in the selection of respondent in the

Laguna State Polytechnic University – Santa Cruz Campus. The subject of the study

composed of 226 Bachelor of Science in Office Administration Students.

Research Procedure

The researcher made a proposal title “Nature and Nurture: Influence on

Course Selection”, and then approved by the panelists. Therefore, the problem was

identified and its background was analyzed. Then, the related literature and studies

were read and studied by the researcher. The data collection methods that will be

used in this research include a face to face interview, and self-administered

questionnaires, the interview served as a quantitative research, for the population of

BSOA students in each section. The questionnaire that will be made by the

researcher seeks to obtain empirical evaluations on Nature and Nurture. A

questionnaire will be used as the major instrument in the data of this study was

made. The tentative draft of the questionnaire will be submitted to the adviser for

judgmental validation. After the validation of the questionnaire, permissions will be

asked to each College and the researcher will distribute the questionnaire among the
selected respondents. The accumulated responses will be tallied, tabulated and

undergoes the same process.

Research Instrument

The questionnaire will be the instrument utilized, the easiest and fastest way

of gathering information. Questionnaires or social surveys are a method used to

collect standardized data from large numbers of people –i.e. the same information is

collected in the same way. They are used to collect data in a statistical form.

The respondents will be asked to choose from fives scales namely: Highly

influenced, influenced, moderately influenced, less influenced not influenced. The

said scale will be used for the research instrument. To qualify the indicators, the

following indicators were utilized:

Qualitative Description Qualitative Statement Scale Range

Strongly Agree Highly Influenced 5 4:20 – 5.00

Agree Influenced 4 3.60 – 4.19

Neither Moderately Influenced 3 2.60 – 3.39

Disagree Less Influenced 2 1.58 – 2.59

Strongly Disagree Not Influenced 1 1.00 – 1.79

Statistical Treatment
This is to determine the influence to students in terms of Surrounding

Culture, Genetic Intelligence, Passion and Social Influence.

This is to determine if there is a significant relationship between Nature and

Nurture.

This is to determine the relationship between Nature and Nurture to the

BSOA students of Laguna State Polytechnic University / respondents.

Weighted Mean is a kind of average. Instead of each data point contributing

equally to the final mean, some data points contribute more weight than others.
