World Youth Day

World Youth Day (WYD) is an ev ent for y oung people organized by the
Catholic Church. The next, World Y outh Day 2022, will be held in Portugal.

World Y outh Day was initiated by Pope John Paul II in 1985. Its concept
has been influenced by the Light-Life Mov ement that has existed in Poland
since the 1960s, where during summer camps Catholic y oung adults ov er 13
day s of camp celebrated a "day of community ". For the first celebration of
WY D in 1986, bishops were inv ited to schedule an annual y outh ev ent to be
held ev ery Palm Sunday in their dioceses. It is celebrated at the diocesan
lev el annually , and at the international lev el ev ery two to three y ears at
different locations. The 1995 World Y outh Day closing Mass in the Map of World Youth Day locations. Countries that have hosted at least one

Traditional process
World Y outh Day is commonly celebrated in a way similar to many ev ents. The most emphasized and well known traditional theme is the unity and
presence of numerous different cultures. Flags and other national declarations are display ed among mainly y oung people to show their attendance at the
ev ents and proclaim their own themes of Catholicism. Such is usually done through chants and singing of other national songs inv olv ing a Catholic
theme.

Ov er the course of the major ev ents taking place, national objects are traded between pilgrims. Flags, shirts, crosses, and other Catholic icons are carried
amongst pilgrims which are later traded as souv enirs to other people from different countries of the world. A unity of acceptance among people is also
common, with all different cultures coming together to appreciate one another.

Other widely recognized traditions include the Pope's public appearance, commencing with his arriv al around the city in the "Popemobile" and then with
his final Mass held at the ev ent. A festiv al in Sy dney (2008) recorded an estimated distance of a 10-kilometre walk as roads and other public transport
sy stems were closed off.

Pope Benedict XVI criticized the tendency to v iew WY D as a kind of rock festiv al; he stressed that the ev ent should not be considered a "v ariant of
modern y outh culture" but as the fruition of a "long exterior and interior path". [1 ]
History

1987 to 1993
1987 WY D was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. 1989 WY D took place in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. 1991 WY D was held in Częstochowa, Poland.
1993 WY D was celebrated in Denv er, Colorado, United States.

1995 to 2005
At WY D 1995, 5 million y ouths gathered at Luneta Park in Manila, Philippines, an ev ent recognized as the
largest crowd ev er by the Guinness World Records. [2 ] In an initial comment immediately following the ev ent,
Cardinal Angelo Amato, Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, stated that ov er 4 million people
had participated. [3 ]

1997 WY D was held in Paris, France. 2000 WY D took place in Rome, Italy . 2002 WY D was held in Toronto,
Ontario, Canada. 2005 WY D was celebrated in Cologne, Germany . Thomas Gabriel composed for the final Mass

Sy dney , Australia, was chosen as the host of the 2008 World Y outh Day celebrations. At the time it was
announced in 2005, WY D 2008 was commended by the then Prime Minister of Australia, Kev in Rudd, and the
Archbishop of Sy dney , Cardinal George Pell. [5 ] World Y outh Day 2008 was held in Sy dney , with the Papal Mass held on the Sunday at Randwick
Racecourse.

The week saw pilgrims from all continents participate in the Day s in the Diocese program hosted by Catholic dioceses throughout Australia and New
Zealand. Pope Benedict XVI arriv ed in Sy dney on 13 July 2008 at Richmond Air Force Base. Cardinal Pell celebrated the Opening Mass at Barangaroo
(East Darling Harbour) with other activ ities including the re-enactment of Christ's passion during the Stations of the Cross and the pope's boat cruise
through Sy dney Harbour. Pilgrims participated in a v ariety of y outh festiv ities including v isits to St Mary 's Cathedral, daily catechesis and Mass led by
bishops from around the world, concerts, v isits to the tomb of Saint Mary MacKillop, the Vocations Expo at Darling Harbour, reception of the Sacrament
of Reconciliation, and pray ing before the Blessed Sacrament during Adoration. The Mass and concert at Barangaroo saw an estimated crowd of 150,000.

The ev ent attracted 250,000 foreign v isiting pilgrims to Sy dney , with an estimated 400,000 pilgrims attending Mass celebrated by Pope Benedict XVI
on 20 July . [6 ]

On 12 June 2008, Xt3.com, a Catholic social online network and news site, was launched as the Official Catholic Social Network of WY D. [7 ] It is
considered to be a direct fruit of WY D08, just as Salt + Light Telev ision was a direct fruit of WY D 2002 in Toronto.

In May 2007 , it was reported that Guy Sebastian's song "Receiv e the Power" had been chosen as official anthem
for World Y outh Day (WY D08) to be held in Sy dney in 2008. The song was co-written by Guy Sebastian and
Gary Pinto, with v ocals by Paulini. [8 ][9 ]

"Receiv e the Power"[1 0 ] was used extensiv ely throughout the six day s of World Y outh Day in July 2008 and
also in worldwide telev ision cov erage. [1 1 ]

In Nov ember 2008, a 200-page book, Receive the Power, was launched to commemorate World Y outh Day
2008. [1 2 ]

2011
Following the celebration of Holy Mass at Randwick Racecourse in Sy dney on 20 July 2008, Pope Benedict XVI announced that the next International
World Y outh Day 2011 would be held in Madrid, Spain. This ev ent was held from 16–21 August 2011.

There were nine official patron saints[1 3 ] for World Y outh Day 2011 in addition to Pope St. John Paul II: St. Isidore, St. John of the Cross, St. María de la

During his address to seminarians, Benedict announced that the Spanish my stic and patron of Spanish diocesan clerics St. John of Áv ila would become a
"Doctor of the Church", [1 4 ] a designation granted to only 34 saints throughout the twenty centuries of Church history .

An estimated 2,000,000 people attended an all-night v igil to complete the week, more than expected.
2013
Since 2002, World Y outh Day has been held ev ery three y ears. After the 2011 ev ent the next World Y outh Day
was scheduled a y ear earlier than usual, in 2013 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in order to av oid any conflict with the
2014 FIFA World Cup being held in 12 different host cities throughout Brazil and the 2016 Summer Oly mpics
being held in Rio de Janeiro. More than 3 Million catholic y outh had gathered for the ev ent from across the
