ABSTRACT

21st CENTURY SKILLS OF DWCV COLLEGE STUDENTS Dr. Elita Bielza – Valdez
et al., Institutional Collaborative Research, Divine Word College of Vigan, (Vigan City,
Philippines, 2019). Pages:

This study aimed to: Determine the level of preparedness of college students as

perceived by the students along the 21st century skills: learning and innovation skills;

information, media and technology skills; life and career skills; Identify the level of

preparedness of college students as perceived by the instructors along the 21st century

skills: learning and innovation skills; information, media and technology skills; life and

career skills; and Determine the significant difference between the perception of the

students with the faculty on the preparedness of Divine Word College of Vigan students

along the 21st century skills.

The study used the descriptive – survey method for the study. The study was

conducted in the Divine Word College of Vigan college students across programs or

courses during the second semester of the School Year 2018-2019. The sample population

of one hundred twenty (120) student respondents: 30 CTE; 30 CBA; 30 CHTM; 30 COC

and sixteen (16) faculty members of the college department. The number of the sample

population was determined using the Slovin’s Formula. Quantitative data analyses were

conducted using descriptive statistics: mean to measure the level of students’ preparedness

in each variable under each area for each group of respondents. Pearson Correlation

Coefficient was used to analyze the difference between the perception of the students and

that of the faculty.

The following conclusions were arrived at: 1) The identified positively prepared level of

preparedness of the DWCV college students along the 21st Century Skills implies that there

are areas of learning and preparation that needs to be addressed specially along the ICT

Literacy Skills; 2) The level of preparedness along the ICT Literacy Skills has an effect on

the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The ability to critically

evaluate the information derived from media, functional, critical thinking and problem

solving skills are enhanced with the use of the ICT skills and other means that could be

embedded in their everyday learning.

In the light of the findings and conclusions, the following recommendations are advanced:

1)The provision of well - rounded learning opportunities for the preparation of college

students requires creative and competent instructors and a responsive preparation program

to equip them with the needed knowledge and skills for them thrive in the modern learning

environments and work places; 2)The 21st Century Skills can be developed among college

students with the provision of relevant courses, program of activities and learning

experiences. This implies the importance of having creative and competent instructors who

serve as mentors to these future professionals. It should, however, be noted that learning

should also be self-directed. The initiative to learn is imperative in the preparation of

college students.
