 Definitions of Reading

1. “Perceiving a written text in order to understand its contents. This can be done silently
(silent reading). The understanding that result is called reading comprehension.

2. "Reading" is the process of looking at a series of written symbols and getting meaning
from them.

3. Reading is defined as a cognitive process that involves decoding symbols to arrive at


meaning.

4. Reading is a multifaceted process involving word recognition, comprehension,


fluency, and motivation. Learn how readers integrate these facets to make meaning
from print.

5. Reading is the complex cognitive process of decoding symbols to derive meaning.

1. JD Salinger:
“What really knocks me out is a book that, when you're all done reading it, you wish the
author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone
whenever you felt like it. That doesn't happen much, though.”

 Types of Reading
The four main types of reading techniques are the following:
1. Skimming
2. Scanning
3. Intensive
4. Extensive

Skimming :
Skimming is sometimes referred to as gist reading. Skimming may help in order to know what
the text is about at its most basic level.
Scanning:
Scanning a text is a reading technique where the reader looks for specific information rather than
trying to absorb all the information.
Intensive:
Intensive reading involves learners reading in detail with specific learning aims and tasks.
Extensive:
Extensive reading involves learners reading texts for enjoyment and to develop general reading
skills.
