ARCH 4A_A1

METHODOLOGY

Rehabilitating the existing Balangay Shrine Museum requires analyzing the existing
building and the factors that contribute to its incapability to effectively house artifacts
it supposedly preserves, formulating design guidelines and developing
recommendations in rehabilitating the structure then greatly depends on its issues.
There will be two main phases in the course of this study, first is the evaluation and
documentation of the existing Balangay Shrine Museum and identifying its issues with
regards to tropical design principles, the second phase will be rehabilitating the
structure based on the data acquired on the second phase.

On the first phase of the study an in situ observation & analysis of the structure’s
existing architectural features allows us to photo document and record actual
measurements while directly observe their level of impact to artifacts in terms of
temperature, relative humidity, light intake and air quality with in the structure. The
general body mass, fenestration, surrounding elements and vegetation near the
structure are some of the most contributing factors to its tropical design features.
Providing scaled sketches of the windows, doors, vents or any particular opening that
allows light and air to travel from outside to the indoor environment of the building will
be deemed very essential. After gathering required information digital prototyping the
existing building can then be done in several software like Sketchup and Revit together
with several plugins to simulate air quality movement and shadow analysis of the
structure and its surrounding elements.

Overlaying the acquired data to the renovated design shall then be the second phase
of the study where identified issues are answered and other methods of data gathering
such as Interviews & Open-Ended Response surveys are conducted to acquire other
data such as space requirements, programming and circulation needed for the
museum to function as a whole.
