Vet’s view Summer start for

LAST summer many of you will know that
the “Bunnies of Neston” were subjected to
a lethal epidemic of Myxomatosis. Despite
this, we still see far to many rabbits which
have not been vaccinated. Myxomatosis is
invariably fatal in unvaccinated rabbits. It
is a virus spread by fleas and mosquitoes,
and all rabbits in back gardens are at risk.
Vaccination lasts only six months so it does
need frequent
repeat injections.
But it is a
lifesaver.
Too many
owners still think
of rabbits as an
“Easypet”. Easy to keep they are not! They
need a very outdoor lifestyle, a specific
grass based diet, and several preventative
health care medication regimes, over and
above Myxo vaccination:-
Preventative summertime treatments to
avoid the horrendous maggots of “Fly strike”
park improvements
WORK is expected to begin later this
summer on improvements to Westvale
Park, in Little Neston.
It currently consists of a narrow
pathway, a grassed area and limited play
equipment but funding has been secured
to make significant improvements to this
community green space.
Representatives from Ellesmere Port and
Neston Borough Council, Groundwork
Merseyside and HAGs (the council’s
approved play equipment provider) were
on-hand to give people information and
find out how they’d like to see their park
improve at a meeting last month.
Mary Lavery, the borough council’s parks
development officer, said: “We have
some initial ideas about creating a wider
path, installing new play equipment, soft

landscaping, new signage and railings.”

l WE are very pleased with the much
needed development of a broad, well
known quality supermarket in Neston
town centre.
As a disabled person, who moved up
here three years ago from southern
Hampshire, I have been disappointed by
the lack of resources and infrastructure
in this area and will be delighted to have
Sainsbury’s on our doorstep, not have to
drive 20 minutes!
I hope that the sorely inadequate parking
for disabled people will then be taken
into serious consideration, to include the
civic centre. Where we lived, there were
several blue badge bays around all public
places but in this area, their apparent
absence has severely reduced the
scope of activities I was accustommed
to previously-libraries, public halls,
civic centres, (not including Ellesmere
Port) - Neston needs bringing into the
21st century but there is no reason why
current small shop keepers should miss
out.Could their premises not be relocated
alongside the supermarket, a sort of
“mall-style” layout, giving shoppers choice
very close by?
The market wouldn’t lose out as too

cannot see any adverse affect with
a supermarket, especially if other
local individual shopkeepers could be
accommodated within the proposed new
development.
I don’t know of any “amenity space”
in Neston that would be spoilt by this
development so do not agree with the
Wirral Society at all.
Go ahead with this and bring some fresh
inspiration here-it is much needed!

supermarket, only 500 signatures
submitted by opponents to the scheme,
leaving an awful lot of Neston residents in
favour. It can only be good for the town.
For too long people have moaned about
Ellesmere Port getting all the attention.
Now it’s our turn so let’s back the scheme
all the way.
As for 22 supermarkets 20 minutes from
Neston, that has to be by car. What is
green about that ?

Going wild about the meadow
FOR the first time in its full glory, Ness
Gardens has recreated a ‘ Wildflower
Meadow’, reminding us all what nature is
really about and taking many of us back
in time to our childhood memories.
Over two hectares of grassland have
been converted into a wildflower meadow,
the stunning transformation has taken
place over the last few months, mown
grass has been replaced by shimmering
fields of blue cornflowers.
Thanks to a grant from the Friends of
Ness Gardens, and working with Dr Phil
Putwain from the University of Liverpool
COMMUNITY
a project was developed to introduce
meadow flowers back to the gardens at
Ness. The hardest task is to reduce the
fertility of the soil to allow the flowers to
compete with the grass. Landlife, the
16 Liverpool based charity, were employed to

The result has been a return to the
display of simpler agricultural times,
when cornfields were often scattered
with annual flowers such as corn cockle,

The long term aim is to manage the
areas for meadow flowers to encourage
wildlife. Ness already conducts surveys
on its moths, butterflies and damselflies
and this year we will be working with the
Liverpool Museum to look at natural Bee
populations.
Ness Gardens created a special display
garden to mark the 10th anniversary
of the RHS Tatton Show “Garden for
Bees” highlights the importance of Bee
pollination and to demonstrate how we
can attract them into our gardens.

Art on show at Ness

A GROUP of local artists are holding a
major exhibition this month.
A diverse and dynamic show will be
staged at Ness Gardens from 7th-19th
August.
It is the second exhibition of the work
the Spectrum Art Group, who were
previously known as The St. Paul’s
Artists.
Admission to the exhibition is free.

The rebirth of St Thomas’s

A
FTER 14 years struggle, the village
church in the centre of Parkgate
is to reopen and will be available
for use by community organisations. The
group that fought to keep it would like to
hear from you about future use.
The church was closed, for structural
reasons, in 1994 and, after proposals for
sale and demolition were overcome, to
secure its future as a centre of village life
in perpetuity, members of the congrega-
tion joined with the Parkgate Preservation
Trust and the Parkgate Society to create
the Bishop’s Trust for the Restoration of
St Thomas’s Church.
Now, after major structural work, includ-
ing a new roof, tie bars and repairs to
stonework, work on the interior has begun
to make it possible for services take place
and make it available for community
activities hopefully by early 2009. The
generosity of supporters, far and near,
and a Heritage Fund grant, has brought it
to this point and fund-raising continues for
new heating, lighting, plumbing, furnish-
ings and redecoration.
Planning for church and community use
and St Thomas’s reopening has begun.
