Introduction

Nowadays, the world faces different environmental problems specifically air

pollution. Tiesa (Pauteria Campachiana) also known as Canistel, its texture is

likened to the yolk of a hard-boiled egg giving its other common name “egg fruit”.

Tiesa has a lot of useful products which can be developed from the fruit to the

tree itself whether it is for industrial, medicinal or nutritional value. The attractive

yellow Tiesa fruit can be eaten out of hand or turned into jams or ice creams. .

Alternatively, Tiesa is used and applied to treat skin diseases in Cuba. Its seeds

are also found useful as remedy for ulcers while the seed oils are believed to

prevent hair loss. Among the 188 known species under the genius, three have

been identified as having commercial importance and potential and one of them

is Tiesa fruit. This fruit is introduced to many tropical countries including the

Philippines. It still one of the fruits in our country which go unnoticed.

Air Pollution is mainly caused by too much emission of carbon dioxide and

other hazardous gases in to earth’s atmosphere causing diseases, death to

humans, damage to other living organisms such as food crops or the natural built

environment.

The researchers aim to solve the problem of air pollution in this country. The

researchers want to conduct this research to determine if Tiesa can be

alternative to use as one of the source of biodiesel. The researchers also want to

determine if Tiesa seed contain oil that can be use as biodiesel.

Methodology

Sample Collection

The samples of the fresh Tiesa seeds were purchased from the

supermarket. The seed were extracted from the Tiesa fruit, washed and sun-

dried for almost 2 weeks, pulverized, put into the clean and sterilized container

and brought to the Department of Science and Technology-Standard and Testing

Division (DOST), Western Bicutan, Taguig City for the test of present oil content

in the Tiesa seed.

Oil Extraction

After the researchers went to the DOST. The percentage of the Tiesa seeds

was estimated by Soxhlet Extraction method at DOST- STD. Clean and oven-

dried beakers with finely crushed glass powder were used. The exact weight

used for the analysis was 10.0 grams of pulverized sample.

Project Title: Physicochemical analysis of Tiesa (Pauteria Campechiana) Seed

Oil as Biodiesel

Research Adviser: Ms. Lilibeth S. Lumapas

A. Statement of the Problem

This study will be conducted to:

1. Determine the potential of the Tiesa (PauteriaCampechiana) seed extracts as

a component of biodiesel.

2. Determine the oil content present in the seed extracts.

B. Statement of the Null Hypothesis

Based on the foregoing research problems, the following hypothesis was

formulated:

1. The oil content of Tiesa (Pauteria Campechiana) seed is not feasible to use as

a component of Biodiesel.

2. There is small percentage of oil content present in the Tiesa seed extract.

C. Significance of the Study

The use of biodiesel will help lessen the amount of greenhouse gases

produced by car engines to the atmosphere for it only exerts a very small carbon

footprint and it will reduce global climate change. It may also help lessen the
amount of people having lung cancer because it only releases small amount of

dangerous gases. Pollution is also the concern of this study, to lessen

specipically the Air pollution. The Biodiesel that will be produce will have a

cheaper value for it to be affordable which the researcher is also the significance

of this study.

D. Materials and Methods

The material needed in this research is three kilos of Tiesa seeds to be

submitted to the DOST- STD for the analysis of present oil content.

Soxhlet Extraction Method is the method for this research that will be

conducted by DOST in Western Bicutan, Taguig City.

E. Budgetary Proposal

Tiesa seed Php 60 per kilo

Analysis of Oil Content Php 600

Transportation Php 500

Meals Php 300 x 3

Total Php 2,060
