SECOND TERM EXAMINATION
PHYSICS SS 2
Instruction: Answer any FOUR questions
take g as 10m/s2 where necessary
1a. Define the terms resultant and equilibrant of forces.
b. Explain the difference between the two terms
c. A mass of 4kg is supported by two cords which make angles of 400 and 600 with the
vertical. Calculate the tension in the two cords

2a. What do you understand by the terms moment of a force, couple and centre of gravity?
b. State the principle of moments
c. A picture 6N is supported by a string on a nail as shown in the diagram. Find the tension
on the strings A and B if the strings are each inclined at 700 to the vertical.

3a. State the conditions of equilibrium for a number of coplanar parallel forces.
b. A light beam AB sits on two pivots C and D. A load of 15N hangs at 0, 2m from the
support at C. Find the value of the reaction forces P and Q at C and D. take the distances

4a. State Newton’s laws of motion

b. A body of mas 100g moving with a velocity of 10m/s collides with a wall. If after the
collision it moves with a velocity of 2m/s in the opposite direction, calculate the change
in momentum.

5a. State the Principle of conservation of momentum.

b. Distinguish between elastic and inelastic collisions
c. A ball of mass 6kg moving with a velocity of 10m/s collides with a 2kg ball moving in the
opposite direction with a velocity of 5m/s. After collision the two balls coalesce and
move in the same direction. Calculate the velocity of the composite body.

6. It is required to cause a body of mass 500g to accelerate uniformly from rest across a
smooth horizontal surface so that it will cover a distance of 20m in 4s. Determine:
a. the acceleration which must be imparted to the body
b. the magnitude of the minimum force required to produce this acceleration
c. the momentum of the body at the of the 4s period.

SECOND TERM EXAMINATION
PHYSICS SS 1
Instruction: Answer 1 and any other THREE questions
take g as 10m/s2 where necessary

1. A car starting from rest accelerates uniformly and attains a speed of 80m/s in
30s. It maintains this steady speed for another 30s. it then slows down uniformly
until it comes to rest in the next 40s.
a. Sketch the velocity – time graph for the motion of this car.
b. obtain from the graph the uniform acceleration during the first stage of the
journey
c. For how long did the car travel altogether?
2a. State the laws of static friction
b. A metal block of mass 5kg lies on a rough horizontal platform. If a horizontal
force of 8N applied to the block through its centre of mass just slides the block on
the platform. Calculate the coefficient of limiting friction between the block and
the platform.
3a. What is meant by Friction?
b. State two advantages and disadvantages of friction?
c. State two methods of reducing friction
4a. Explain what causes motion?
b. Distinguish between contact force and force field.
c. Give two examples each in (b)
5. A stone whirled at the end of a rope 0.3m long, makes 10 revolutions in 2
seconds. Find
a. the angular velocity in rad/s
b. the linear speed.
c. the distance covered in 5seconds
6a. State the difference between centripetal force and centrifugal force
b. A mass of 10kg is moving in a circular path of radius 3m with a uniform speed of
50m/s. Find
(i) the centripetal acceleration
(ii) the centripetal force
