Analog IC Design Assignment 2

1. Compute 𝑉𝐷 , 𝑉𝑆 , 𝑉𝐷𝑆 and 𝑉𝐺𝑆 if 𝐼𝐷3 = 2 mA, 𝑅𝐷 = 500 Ω, 𝑉𝑂𝑉3 = 0.5 V, and identical 𝑄1
& 𝑄2 with µ𝑛 Cox (𝑊/𝐿 ) = 8 mA/𝑉 2 , 𝑉𝑡ℎ = 0.5 V, λ = 0. A) For 𝑉𝐺 = 0 and B) For 𝑉𝐺 = 1
V. Repeat the exercise for λ = 0.1 𝑉 −1 .
Note: 𝑉𝑂𝑉 = 𝑉𝐺𝑆 − 𝑉𝑡ℎ

2. Compute all indicated R’s, v’s, and i’s . Assume transistors are identical.
3. Due to manufacturing error, a parasitic resistance has appeared between drain and
source of Q1. Compute 𝑣0 . Assume identical transistors are identical.

4. For the circuit below let (𝑅1 + 𝑅2 ) ≫ 𝑅𝐷 . Using small-signal analysis find the open
𝑣0 𝑣𝑓 𝑣
loop gain 𝐴 = , feedback factor 𝛽 = and closed loop gain 𝐴𝑓 = 0 . If Aβ >>1 , find
𝑣𝑖 𝑣0 𝑣𝑖
an approximate expression for 𝐴𝑓 . Neglect 𝑟0 .
5. A) Modify the circuit below to include a dominant pole at 100 MHz (𝑅𝑠𝑖𝑔 = 200 Ω,
𝑅𝐷 = 1 k, 𝑅𝐿 = 2 k, 1/𝑔𝑚 = 100 Ω, λ = 0, and ignore internal capacitances of the
MOS).
B) Compute the dominant pole in the circuit you designed if 𝑅𝑠𝑖𝑔 is reduced by a half.
C) Compute the dominant pole in the circuit you designed if , 𝑅𝐿 is reduced by a half.

6. Using feedback techniques, find the input and output impedance and voltage gain of
each circuit shown below.

7. This problem is concerned with the op-amp circuit shown in the figure below. This op-
amp is intended for single-supply applications, with the supply rail voltages of 𝑉𝐷𝐷 =
5V and 𝑉𝑆𝑆 = 0V .For the purpose of this problem , you may assume the op-amp is
connected as a follower with negative feedback so that all the MOSFETs are in
saturation region, and the input and output node voltages are +2.5V.
(a) Find the DC operating point (𝐼𝐷 ; 𝑉𝐺𝑆 ) for all MOSFETS.
(b) Determine the voltage with respect to ground at each node.
(c) Determine the value of the resistor 𝑅𝐵 .
(d) Determine the unity gain frequency (gain bandwidth product) 𝑓𝑇 for this op-amp.

8. In the differential amplifier shown below, two resistors are used at the output for
common-mode feedback. The amplifier does not need any bias circuit to function
properly. You may assume perfect differential matching between the two halves of the
circuit, and the 𝑔𝑚 ’s and 𝑟𝑜 ’s of M1-M8 are known. Consider only the devices shown
in the diagram, answer the following questions.
a) Derive an expression for the differential mode voltage gain 𝐴𝐷𝑀 , assuming that M5-
M8 are biased in saturation.
b) Repeat a) by assuming M5-M8 are operating in triode region. To make this amplifier
function properly, i.e., to obtain a large 𝐴𝐷𝑀 , should M5-M8 be biased in saturation
or triode region?
