Calibration Procedures
Revision N/C
1) General Requirements
All tools and gages, which are used to assure final conformance of supplies to the
customer, will be calibrated at intervals outlined in the Whalley Precision Inc. Quality
Control Manual.
2) Environmental Controls
When tools or gages are calibrated in house such calibration shall be done when the
inspection room temperature stabilizes between 68-72 degrees Fahrenheit.
Any significant out of tolerance conditions found during the course of calibration will be
so noted in the calibration files. Immediate evaluation as to the possible impact on goods
furnished to the customer will be made by the quality control manager.
The quality control manager on form will perform periodic audits of the calibration
system.
5) Calibration Sources
All inspection tools will be handled in such a way as not to adversely affect the condition
of the equipment.
All tools will be cleaned with alcohol. Burrs or nicks will be removed with an Arkansas
stone.

Note: Gages not conforming to this procedure will be withdrawn from use and sent for
repair or scrap. Acceptable gages will have calibration stickers affixed to the gage.
Procedure:
1) Visual: Examine the micrometer for obvious damage and general condition, repair
as necessary. Clean anvils and spindles with solvent. Inspect anvils and spindles for nicks
and burrs or discoloration. Use a hard Arkansas stone to remove burrs or nicks.
2) Set master block into four height ranges, .250 apart, beginning at the low range of
the micrometer and ending at the high range. Check readings at the four different heights
and on various locations on the anvil, readings must be within .0001. For 0-1”
micrometers, the first reading will be the zero setting.

repair or scrap. Acceptable gages will have calibration stickers affixed to the gage.
Procedure:
1) Visual: Examine the micrometer for obvious damage play and general condition,
repair as necessary. Clean rack and faces with solvent.
2) For outside measurements set master gage blocks at three height settings using
full range of verniers. Measure first the zero setting and continue to measure the blocks.
Measure block at three locations on beam, all measurements must be within .001.
3) For inside measurements follow procedure in step two (2). But place gage blocks
inside gage block holder and take measurements between two (2) extended gage blocks.
4) Place verniers on the optical comparator resting on 1-2-3 blocks and square off.
Measure wear on beam and slide. Surface wear must not exceed .001.

Procedure:
1) Visual: Examine the micrometer for obvious damage and general condition,
repair as necessary. Clean anvils and spindles with solvent. Inspect anvils and spindles
for nicks, burrs and discoloration. Use a hard Arkansas stone to remove burrs and nicks.

repair or scrap. Acceptable gages will have calibration stickers affixed to the gage.
Procedure:
1) Visual: Examine indicator for any damage, then physically test the indicator for
proper action repeatability. Examine the indicator tip under 10x magnification for flat
spots. Gages not conforming will be repaired or scraped.
2) Mount indicator to height stand, using master height gage run indicator over set
known value set indicator to zero. Moving the master height gage in the plus direction
at .0005 increments for .0005 indicators and .0001 for .0001 indicators. Repeat the
process in the minus direction, the indicator must repeat in both directions at each
increment on the dial.
3) Travel indicators, using master size blocks perform the same procedure as in
section two (2).

Procedure:
2) Master height gage, set master size blocks at 1” increments up to 24”. Using .
0005 indicator check all 24 stations, readings must be within .0001.

Procedure:
2) The distance between the two blocks on the gage should be exactly 1.000
±.0005
3) Using an electronic indicator and master blocks to insure that the spacing is 1.000
±.0005.

Procedure:
1) Visual: Examine I.D. gages for wear or damage, physically operate to determine
functional acceptance.
3) I.D. Micrometers and Groove Gages set master size blocks to known value.
