Peace and Conflict Resolution through Democratization and Promotion of

Liberal Values

:Rationale

Asia is a home of multitude of conflicts that challenged the liberal aspiration of a

peaceful, free and democratic community. It is a region marred by different racial
tensions, communist uprisings, armed struggles, terrorism, military rule,
authoritarianism, and wide array of intrastate and international conflicts. It is held that
when there is no peace, freedom is imperiled.

How will the Asian Liberals respond to these challenges? Is there a liberal and
democratic model for the promotion of peace and resolution of conflicts? How can
liberal organizations like the Young Liberals and Democrats of Asia and its member-
organizations (MOs) contribute in the peacebuilding processes in the region? These
are some of the questions that the delegates of the Young Liberals and Democrats of
Asia will attempt to debate and answer in this thematic seminar and workshop.

Objectives:

1. Understand and appreciate the concept of peace and conflict resolution

2. Explore the interconnectedness and significance of democratization,
promotion of liberal values, peace and conflict resolution.
3. Determine the role of the youth and youth organizations in peace
processes in their country and in Asia as a whole.
4. Determine some of major conflicts in the region and how it can
possibly resolve, liberally and peacefully.
5. Explore the plausibility of a peaceful revolution in a nondemocratic
Asian state.
6. Discuss the importance of rule of law and human rights in the
transformation of a post-conflict society.
7. Appreciate the role played by civil societies and nongovernmental
organizations in the peace building and conflict resolution.
8. Find and create a liberal model, tools and campaigns for the promotion
of peace and resolution of conflict in their respective country and in the whole
Asian region.

Strategies:

The program will employ Expert Learning and Non-Formal education approaches.

Expert learning is done through hiring of resource speakers/experts who will provide
the foundation for the participants' theoretical and academic understanding and
appreciation of peace and conflict resolution.

Non Formal Education is participant-centered, action-oriented and value-based

approaches, wherein participants’ experiences and skills are taken into special
consideration from beginning to end in order to achieve maximum results and
interaction.
Each participant is expected to actively contribute to the program since each and
everyone has an individual perspective valuable for sharing with the entire group.

In brief, the participants are just as educative as trainers, lecturers and experts taking
part in the project and therefore many workshops and group discussions are included
in the programme in order to capture the voice of every participant, no difference
what level of experience and education the participant might have.

The PARTICPANTS at the seminar is expected to “bring home” the knowledge,

contacts and spirit achieved at the learning event – thus acting as a multiplier for
liberal values, new findings in the relative field and new working groups.
