MAINTENANCE MANUAL.
CTION = 1 D OPERATION
1. General
A. The engine fire detection system provides fire detection in the engine
and strut areas separated from airplane structure by the firewalls. The
system responds to a general overheat condition or a localized fire
condition by activating warning Lights and an alarm bell. The system
includes a test power unit, test relays and a test switch to permit
testing of the detection system either in flight or on the ground.
B. The system consists of a sensor/responder type element around the engine
and strut areas (Fig. 1). The element is connected to the operating
power unit that actuates the warning Lights and alarm bell. There are
individual fire warning Lights for each engine with a single alarm bell.
Sensor /Responder
A. The sensor/responder is a long pneumatic type detector providing Line
coverage. It consists of a stainless steel tube containing a discrete
element that has been processed to achieve gas absorption commensurate
with the operating temperature set point. When the local temperature
rises to 800 (+ 50)°F, it causes a gas to be released from the discrete
element. As the gas volume increases, the pressure in the stainless
steel tube increases to mechanically actuate a diaphragm switch supported
in the responder unit. Overall heating of the sensor to 325 (+ 25)°F (or
375 (4 25)°F for some airplanes) causes a pressure rise and diaphragm
switch actuation by a secondary, but independent gas which is contained
within the basic stainless steel tube surrounding the discrete element.
Externally, the element is protected throughout its length by a Teflon
‘insulation jacket.
Operating Power Unit,
A. The operating power unit supplies low voltage to operate the internal
warning transformer when the responder diaphragm switch is closed. Two
separate secondary elements of the warning transformer then operate 28
volts ac warning Lights and trigger the alarm bell. Power is supplied to
the operating power unit from the essential 115-volt bus.
Warning System
A. Alarm Bell
(1) An alarm bell is furnished for warning of fire in the engine area.
A silicone-controlled rectifier in the operating power unit controls
the bell. Power to the alarm bell is 28 volts de with a circuit
breaker on the P6-3 load-control center panel. An alarm bell cutout
switch located on the pilot P7 fire switch panel will turn off the
alarm bell when momentarily depressed.
