2. Distance and Displacement

Okey let’s ask

WHY??? Prof.Phy about
this .

Distance is the length of track followed by

object/particle . Distance is an example of a
scalar quantity. Displacement is an example of
a vector quantity. Many other physical
quantities, including position, velocity, and
acceleration, also are vectors. In general, a
vector quantity has direction and magnitude.
Displacement is xf-xi . (xi = initial position and
xf=final position)

To test your understanding of this difference ,

consider the motion depicted in the diagram below. A
physics teacher walks 4 meters East, 2 meters South,
4 meters West, and finally 2 meters North.

Even though the physics teacher has

walked a total distance of 12 meters, his
displacement is 0 meters. There is no
displacement for his motion (displacement = 0
m). He is back again.

Let’s Discuss!!
1. What is the distance of a car from A-B-C-D-C-B?
2. What is the displacement of a car from A-B-C-D-C-B?

A 25 B 35 C 45 D
In kilometres

Answer :
1. The distance of a car from A-B-C-D-C-B is
25 km + 35 km + 45 km + 45 km + 35 km = 185 km

A 25 B 35 C 45 D
In kilometres
answer :
2. The displacement of a car from A-B-C-D-C-B
xi = A ; xf = B . So the displacement is xf-xi =25km-0km=25 km.

What is Speed?
You might describe the motion of an airplane as fast or
slow. By using these words, you are describing the object's
speed. The speed of an object is the distance the object
moves per unit of time.
To calculate the speed of an object, divide the distance
the object travels by the amount of time it takes to travel
that distance.

Distance
Speed =
Time
If you were measuring the distance in meters
and time in seconds, the SI unit for speed is meters
per second, or m/s. For example, an airplane might
travel at a constant speed of 260 m/s. It means that
the airplane will travel a distance of 260 meters in
1 second. Other units of distance include kilometers
(km) and centimeters (cm).
Another unit of time that often used in
measuring speed is hours (h). A typical speed limit for
cars on city streets is about 40 km/h.

Velocity is a vector quantity. So that,

velocity is speed given direction. When
evaluating the velocity of an object, one must
keep track of direction. It would not be enough
to say that an object has a velocity of 155
km/hr. One must include direction information in
order to fully describe the velocity of the
object. For instance, you must describe an
object's velocity as being 155 km/hr,east.

Calculating Average Speed and Average Velocity

The average speed of particle, a scalar quantity, is
defined as the total distance traveled divided by
total time interval use the following formula:
Distance
Average Speed =
Time
In contrast, the average velocity is often computed
using this formula

Displacement
Average Velocity =
Time

So the fastest is ....

t Zacky = sv = 300 m
= 50s
6 m/s

t Rendi = sv = 300 m

ACCELERATION

-When the velocity of a particle changes with

time, it is said to be accelerating.

-Positive acceleration is when the object’s

velocity and acceleration in the same
direction.The object is speeding up

-Negative acceleration is when the object’s

velocity and acceleration are in opposite
directions, the objects is slowing down

Changing velocity, whenever an object's

velocity changes, the object accelerates. For
example, velocity of a car increases when you

go!

Okey. Let’s Yeah.

do the
homework. Let’s do
it now!

What is
motion in one
dimension?

Motion in one
dimension is motion
in straight line.

For example, when you go to school by bicycle, you have a straight track
to your school, that is the motion in one dimension. There are two
motions.
1. One dimension motion with constant velocity
2. One dimension motion with constant acceleration
Okey, What’s one
dimensional motion
with constant
velocity?

17
5. MOTION IN ONE DIMENSION
WITH CONSTANT VELOCITY

It is motion of object
in straight track with
constant velocity

A man is riding horse at a constant

velocity 60 km/h in straight track of
savana .

A car travels at
constant velocity
80km/h in
straight street.

Buldozer pulls sand

2km/hour in straight
road.

So, what’s specification of that

motion?
1. The track is straight? YES
2. Velocity is constant? YES
3. Acceleration? There is NO
acceleration
