WRITING AN ABSTRACT
TEACHING ORAL COMMUNICATION SKILLS: A TASK BASED
APPROACH
ABSTRACT
Oral communication fulfills a number of general and discipline- specific
pedagogical functions. Learning to speak is an important goal in itself, for it equips
students with a set of skills they can use for the rest of their lives. Speaking is the
mode of communication most often used to express opinions, make arguments,
offer explanations, transmit information’ s, and make impressions upon others.
Students need to speak their personal lives, future workplaces, social interactions,
and political endeavors. They will have meetings to attend, presentations to make,
discussions and arguments to participate in, and group to work with. If basic
instruction and opportunities to practice speaking are available, students position
themselves to accomplish a wide range of goals and be useful members of their
communities.
This paper describes the application of the task- based approach to teach oral
communication skills in a academic setting. A course ‘oral communication skill is
taught to the students of engineer at Anna university, Dindigul campus to make

CONVERSATIONAL PRACTICE

Conversation between two friends discussing their college life.

Avneet Hi Mahak!

Mahak Hi Avneet! Nice to see you after a long time!

Avneet Same here! How are you?

Mahak I’m fine. Thanks. What about you?

Avneet I am also fine.

Mahak What are you doing these days?

Avneet Nothing special……just enjoying holidays.

Mahak That’s great!

Avneet What is going on at your end?

Mahak Same here. I am at home with my family.

Avneet How’s your college life going on?

Mahak It’s very nice and relaxed. We enjoy a lot in our college. And yours?

Avneet Not so good. There’s no discipline and strictness in our college. Students
bunk their classes and they don’t let others also study.
Mahak But in our college we have regular classes. The discipline part is very
good. Bunking classes is not possible here.
Avneet You must be happy. We have so many problems in studies…. and have
no one to discuss them.
Mahak In our college, faculty is very good and experienced. They teach us very
6
well and give us a lot of study material such as notes, assignments, etc….
You may also refer to them if you wish.
Avneet Thanks a lot! Of course, I’d like to use them.

Mahak Come to my place in the evening. We’ll discuss these points and will
have a nice time.
Avneet Sure! I’ll definitely come.

Mahak Ok. Bye!

Avneet Bye! Take care!

Talking about oneself

Listen to your instructed reading out the tape script of the tennis player
Divya Joseph talks about herself and respond to the question to the follows:

Hi! I’m Divya Joseph from Kerala, India. I was born on November 9th, 1989.
I am a tennis player and my dream is to win the Wimbledon singles

I was introduced to tennis at the age of seven but my coach refused to allow

When I decide to do something, I leave no stone unturned to get success in
it.
Often, I sit back and reflect on my strengths and weaknesses. By doing so I
am able to think of the strategies to overcome my weak areas.
Last year, in August 2009, I won the Chennai open trophy. I won the all
India tennis championship at the age of 17.
Besides playing tennis, I enjoy good music and love to read books in my
spare time. I am a pure vegetarian and love eating Rajma- Chawal.
One of the little known secrets of my life is that I always wanted to be an

Today, I think, dream and live only tennis. I am proud to lend my face and

Sir,
Sub: Noise Pollution- A threat
On behalf of the people of Memana, I would like to bring to light, the nuisance
caused by jarring sounds.
The people are often irritated by the loudspeakers all the time from the different
halls and the theatres. The marriage halls are not only busy during the marriage
seasons, but also on some other occasions. As the entire social, cultural and
political meetings are conducted there with the use of loudspeakers, the school
children, the patients, the aged and the public cannot have a sound sleep.
The school children are easily diverted by the loudspeakers from the nearby
theatres. Such loudspeakers may affect the general career of the student
immensely.

We are very much afraid to note that such noise may affect the hearing capacity of
the common mass. Our representation to the concerned authorities was in vain.
May I draw the attention of the concerned authorities to take the necessary steps at
once so as to make the students concentrate more on their studies.

The people would think the authorities profusely, if necessary steps are taken at the
earlier.

Thanking you,
Yours sincerely,

Date: 4 February 2019.

Background:
As we decided in the general body meeting on 12th January 2018, my team
conducted a study with the view to find out the preferences of youth to use two
wheelers as mode of transportation.

Method:
Our team conducted surveys in 5 important cities via Kochi, Chennai,
Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Erode. Those we primarily targeted the youth
respondents, we collected data from mixed age group of both sexes in order to do
a comparison. Since we were concentrating only on short trips, we excluded
‘trains’ and had only ‘car’, ‘bus’, ‘bike’ and ‘bicycle’ in the study list. Data from
all the five cities were put together and divided into two heads namely ‘Male
participants’ and ‘Female participants’ with three sub divisions via age group 18-
30, age group 31-45 and age group 46-60 for analysis.

Result: The results have shown that the age group 46-80 prefers car for their
transportation where the other age groups prefers the bikes. The female
participants have equal preference for car and bike. The male population love bike
for their trip.

DESCRIBE CHARTS AND TABLES

The bar chart illustrates the gross domestic product generated from the IT
and service Industry in the UK from 1992 to 2000. It is measured in percentage,
overall, it can be seen that both have increased percentage of GDP, but IT
remained at a higher rate throughout this time.
At the beginning of the period, in 1992, the service industry accounted for 4
percent of GDP, whereas IT exceeded this, adjust over 6 per cent. Over the next
four years the levels became more similar, with both components standing between
6 and just over 8 percent. IT was still higher overall, though it dropped slightly
from 1994 to 1996.
However, over the following four years, the patterns of the two components
were noticeably different. The percentage of GDP from IT increased quite shortly
12 in 1998 and then nearly 15 in 2000, while the service industry stayed nearly the
same, increasing to only 8 percent.

19
At the end of the period, the percentage of GDP from IT almost twice that of
the service industry.
