Universal Design for Learning

The students will create a video using iMovie on the iPads. iMovie helps enhance learning by allowing the
children to create their own video using their own pictures and videos. Students will be able to chose the
information that they use in their video based on what they think is important. Students will be able to learn
visually and kinesthetically by doing this video because the creation of the video is hands-on learning.
Students will be able to get information from a list of resources that have already been approved by their
teacher. If needed, the students could record their voice if there are unspoken words in the video. The
teacher could also help the students translate the information into another language if needed to help
support another student.

Lesson idea implementation:

The teacher will do a short introduction on shapes and some of their attributes. The teacher will then
introduce the project to the students by showing them a sample video (either teacher or previous student
made video). The students will be put into groups and will create a video about shapes. The students can
choose to focus on the attributes of one shape or many shapes, but they will have to get their shape(s)
approved by the teacher to ensure there is not a bunch of videos about the same few shapes. Once their
shapes get approved, the students will be given a list of resources that are pre-approved by their teacher to
use to gather information. Once the students have all of their information together, including 5 or more still
pictures and at least one video clip, they will use iMovie on an iPad to create a video about their shapes. The
video should be about a minute long and must have a title, credits and some sort of audio (either audio from
iMovie or record their voices).
This project should take about 45 minutes total, including the teacher’s introduction. Student learning will be
assessed based off of the accuracy of the information in the video and weather or not the students followed

all directions given to them. The final product can be used to help visual learners and those with auditory
impairments because the videos provide a visual way of learning. If the students record facts and information
for their video, it can help auditory learners and those with visual impairments because they will hear the
information. I can extend learning by having the students provide a translated copy of their video in a
different language. I will conclude the lesson by showing all of the videos and reviewing all of the information
and correcting any incorrect information from the videos. I can provide students with feedback by using a
checklist to determine if they followed directions and if they provided correct information.

Importance of technology:
Using a multimedia authoring tool is critical for this project because the students are able to combine still
pictures with a video clip and audio. Without the video clip int his project, some information may be lost. This
project could be completed without technology but the students would have to draw their own pictures and
talk to the class about their pictures and then they would have to skip the video clip because there is no way
to view a video without technology.
Internet Safety and Student Privacy:
Possible issues surrounding internet safety could be the video falling into the wrong hands, and they now
have the child’s name and voice from the video. To minimize risks to myself and the students, I will have the
parents sign a form allowing their child’s video to be posted to the class blog. To alleviate any fears by
parents/administrators, when we share the videos, they will be placed on the password protected page on
our class blog to ensure only the right people see them. To follow common safety procedures, I will only allow
the child’s first name to be in the video and only upon parent permission will the name be in the video on the
blog.
Reflective Practice:
I feel that this project could be very beneficial to student learning and help out auditory and visually impaired students
as well as help auditory and visual learners. If a group ahs time to translate the video, it could also be beneficial to
English Language learners in the class. To further extend the lesson, I could have the children create a video comparing
and contrasting two different shapes based on their attributes.
