I. OBJECTIVES
1. Trace some common star patterns.
2. Recognize star patterns in the sky.
3. Define constellation operationally.
IV. PROCEDURE:
A. ELICIT:
CHARACTERISTICS OF A STAR
Color – a star color depends on its temperature
Example:
a. Blue stars are the hottest stars with an average surface temperature of 20000 ℃
b. Red stars are the coolest stars with an average surface temperature of 3200 ℃
c. Our sun is a yellow star with an approximately 5500 ℃ surface temperature.
Sizes – stars have different sizes, the big stars are the hot stars, and smaller stars are the
cooler stars.
a. The bigger the star, the hotter it is, but it has shorter lives because of its hotness.
Supergiant
Giant
Medium sized
Dwarf star
Neutron/dead star
o Sizes of stars as seen from earth varies because of the difference in distance
(lightyears).
Brightness – brightness of star as seen from earth is its apparent brightness, also
depends on how far a star from earth.
B. ENGAGE:
Show a picture of night sky full of stars
a. What have you observed in the picture?
b. What are your other observations?
Show pattern of stars “Tatlong maria”/ small dipper
a. Are you familiar with those star formations/star patterns?
b. Do you find then at the same location/position in the sky?
Show pictures of the 12 zodiac signs
a. What did you see in the pictures?
b. What are your zodiac signs?
c. Did you know where those zodiac signs came from?
Procedure:
1. Ask the students to work in pairs.
2. Determine and trace the given star pattern from the star chart below
3. Label the traced star pattern.
D. EXPLAIN:
Guide Questions:
1. Were you able to trace the different star patterns? How?
2. What did you noticed in each star pattern?
3. What do you call those different shapes formed by different star patterns?
E. ELABORATE:
Constellations – are forms of bright stars which appear close to the other on the sky
but are really far apart from each other in space.
- Imaginary group of stars that form pictures of animals, objects, and pictures.
- Were discovered by ancient civilizations like Greek and Babylonians.
- Ancient people use constellation on determining season on when to sow and
harvest (calendar was not yet invented).
- It is use in navigational purposes. Polaris (North Star) is widely used in
navigation because it does not change its location anytime of the month or year.
Why do stars and constellations seem to move or change its position in the sky at night?
___________ 1. These are imaginary group of stars that form pictures of animals and
objects.
___________ 2. What star is commonly used in navigational purposes?
___________ 3. This star (answer in no.2) is commonly known as.
___________ 4. Who first discovered the different constellations?
___________ 5. What zodiac sign appears on January 21 to February 20?
