View of Walkway Plaza A | DESIGN FEATURES
View of Walkway Plaza B | DESIGN FEATURES
1. Metro connectivity via walkway
2. Gently sloped up ramp from near Hanuman
Mandir side for direct access to Metro using
walkway (this side has maximum pedestrian
traffic flow)
3. Entrance points close to or in direct line of
sight of existing bus stops.
4. Plaza –like entrances wherever possible

EASE OF CONNECTIVITY
1. Wide carriageway
2. Marked exits
3. Visual connections and place-making elements in design
to help orient users.
4. Colour coded markers on floor
5. Backlit signage at forks in passageway and
entrance/exits

EASE OF NAVIGATION
1. Ramps, lifts, staircases with dual
height handrails
2. Heat applied tactile pads for the
visually impaired
3. Lifts at all entrances for persons
in wheelchairs

UNIVERSAL ACCESS
DESIGN
INNOVATION
1. Curved geometry for dynamic perspective
2. Envisage walkway as more than a
transitory experience by integrating public
spaces and retail experiences
3. Integration of landscape and retail:
landscaped garden/street market concept

INNOVATION OF LAYOUT
1. Natural finishes
2. Integration of green
elements, planters
along walkway
3. Resting and breathing
spaces provided along
the walkway.

sides.

INNOVATION IN STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS

1. Tensile fabric over steel
exoskeleton. This allows light
penetration and cuts down direct
solar glare.
2. Solar panels over landings near
entrance.

INNOVATION IN ROOFING
1. Wood Plastic Composite Tile
Decking.
2. Modular, easy to replace, low
maintenance, perforation allow
percolation of water to subsurface.
3. Drainage pipes underneath floor
collect and carry rainwater to toilets
for storage and subsequent use.

INNOVATION IN FLOORING
1. Dual heighted handrail
2. Led strip lighting under handrail to
provide light on the surface of the
walkway.
3. These are switched on from dusk
to dawn to illuminate the path

LIGHTING CONCEPT: HANDRAIL LIGHTS

1. Under -lighting to create
diffused lighting using tensile
fabric
2. Adaptive Lighting: Sensors
control under-lighting to
optimize energy utilization by
switching off/ dimming lights
when the walkway is not in use.

LIGHTING CONCEPT: UNDERLIGHTING

SAFETY
FEATURES
1. Direct visual access: Porous skin
2. Creation of public space near exits
3. Wide, unobstructed walkway allows quick
evacuation
4. Collapsible staircases at mid section for
emergency evacuation.

SAFETY OF ACCESS
1. CCTV surveillance
2. Intelligent lighting, transparent walls ,highly
visible sections
3. Kiosks at nodes create eyes on the street
4. Constant police presence at ground level
5. Police presence at ground level in case of
emergencies.
6. Planters along sides provide visual relief
while also discouraging children from leaning
against the edge.

WOMEN AND CHILDREN’S SAFETY

ECONOMY OF
CONSTRUCTION
1. Flooring in Wood Composite Tiles
with Heat Fixed Tactile Tiles for aid
of visually impaired users.
2. Exoskeleton: Hot dipped galvanized
steel.
3. Roofing and walls in tensile fabric
and Glass.
4. Railings in stainless steel

MATERIAL CONSIDERATIONS
1. Different quality
of different
walkway
sections: open
and roofed for
visual relief with
adequate
protection from
the elements
2. Steel tubed
exoskeleton with
tensile roofing
3. Light weight,
durable materials
4. Modular design

TENSILE ROOFING
1. Low maintenance
surfaces
2. Easy to replace, no
need to dismantle or
demolish any part for
repairs

ECONOMY OF MAINTENANCE
ENVIRONMENT
FRIENDLY DESIGN
1. Use existing parks/ open spaces
for plaza themed entry ways
2. Shrubbery in planters along
walkway
3. Extend the green character of
central Delhi to elevated spaces.

INTEGRATION OF GREENS
1. Solar panels over entrances
capable of generating 40 kW
power at peak output. This
translates to about 4500 units of
electricity every year.
2. Adaptive lighting along the
walkway and up-lighting on tensile
is sensor controlled to dim/turn off
lights when not in use.

ENERGY GENERATION AND SAVINGS|

SMART SYSTEMS
1. Annual rainfall in Delhi is about
600 mm. For a project of this
size, it translates to about 2300
kL every year.
2. Captured water can be used in
toilets facilities for flushing and
for recharging ground water in
the area.

COMMERCIAL
POTENTIAL
1. Wide span allows multiple activities to
happen in cross section
2. Kiosks at nodes as an alternative to street
markets
3. Advertisement Panels
4. Integration of Public Utilities

DESIGN FOR COMMERCIAL POTENTIAL

1. Available space for 10 pre-fabricated
kiosks
2. Kiosk size: 3 m x 3.5m (110 sq.ft.) and
2m x 3m (65 sq. ft.)
