INTRODUCTION

The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is a

comprehensive trade agreement that sets the rules of trade and
investment between Canada, the United States, and Mexico. Since
the agreement entered into force on January 1, 1994, NAFTA has
systematically eliminated most tariff and non-tariff barriers to free
trade and investment between the three NAFTA countries.

NAFTA is a formal agreement that establishes clear rules for

commercial activity between Canada, the United States, and Mexico.
NAFTA is overseen by a number of institutions that ensure the proper
interpretation and smooth implementation of the Agreement’s
provision. It removed taxes on products traded between the United
States, Canada, and Mexico. It also protects copyrights, patents, and
trademarks between those three countries. It was updated with the
North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation, which
helped set more environmental regulations and helped reduce
pollution. It was also updated with the North American Agreement for
Labour Cooperation, which helped people fight for better work
conditions.

 The fluctuations in the graph are mainly because of the fact that this
is trade between a developed and a developing country.
 Mexico: Until 2005, due to globalization India had increased its
exports and G had steadily fallen, but from 2006, talks to improve
trade relations helped to increase Mexico’s import to India which
increased G and trade has been improving ever since.
 Canada: Value of G is steady from 1993-2013 as both nations import
and export similar quantities of goods.
 USA: Value of G for USA has always been lower than 100, as USA has
always imported more from India than exported.

 India has had a deteriorating value of N with the world as seen in the
graph, fluctuating around 80%.
 This is mainly due to reduced exports and high imports of Petroleum
and crude oil, precious stones, gold etc.
 The marginal export growth is curtailed by high import growth, the
export growth is not increasing.

 As far as NAFTA is concerned, it was more of a trade between India

and USA than other NAFTA members.
 Indian trade with Canada and Mexico is still developing and hasn’t
flourished much. So, the I value remains low.
 A rise in Income terms of trade means a country is importing more
goods in return of the goods it is exporting.
 Indian imports from USA has been on an increase from 1990 and
became more robust after NAFTA in 1994 and thus its Income terms
of trade has been on an increase overall.

 The double factorial terms of trade take into account productivity

changes both in the domestic export sector and the foreign export
sector producing the country’s imports.
 Mexico has not been able to improve its productivity due to weak
labour productivity as the workers work on much lower incomes than
their American counterparts.
 A rise in the index of double factorial terms of trade of a country
means that the productive efficiency of the factors producing exports
has increased relatively to the factors producing imports in the other
country.
