Find the expressions for maximum deflection and bending moment of beam under

5. Explain Rayleigh Ritz method with suitable examples and also explain some im-

6. Derive the equation for torque and angle of twist for two cell closed section. Also
calculate the total strain energy stored [16]

7. A built up beam of I section of flange 300 mm and thickness of 50 mm and a web of


height 1000mm and thickness of 20 mm is simply supported at the ends. Compute
its length given that when it is subjected to a load of 40kN per meter length it is
deflected by 10 mm.Find out the safe load of this beam if it is used as a column
with both ends fixed. Assume factor of safety =4. Use Eulers formula E=210Gpa

2. At a point in an elastic material, a direct tensile stress of 60N/mm2 and a direct
compressive stress of 40N/mm2 are applied on planes at right angles to each other.

If the maximum principal stress is limited to 75N/mm2 (tensile), find the shear
stress that may be allowed on the planes. Also determine the minimum principal

1. A steel beam of length 2 m is resting on an elastic foundation and has free ends.
The beam is 10 mm wide and 120 mm thick and carries two concentrated forces
of 1kN, one at each end. Determine the maximum bending stresses developed in
the beam. Assume E = 2x105 N/mm2 , ν = 0.30 and modulus of foundation as
10.5N/mm2 .

2. A bar 5 m long and 50 mm in diameter is clamped at its lower end. The upper

formly distributed load of 6kN/m over an effective span of 4m. Calculate the
magnitude and direction of the principal stress at a point located 0.50m from the

7. (a) Prove complimentary nature of shearing stresses and define the direction of
positive shear stresses.

(b) Derive equation for a generalized Hooks law. [8+8]

8. A horizontal girder of steel having uniform section is 14m long and is simply sup-
ported at its ends. It carries concentrated loads of 120kN and 80kN at two points
3m and 4.5m from the two ends respectively. ‘I’ for the section of the girder is 16×
108 mm4 and Es = 210kN/mm2 . Calculate the deflection of girder at points under
the loads and also maximum deflection. [16]

4. A rectangular block of material is subjected to a tensile stress of 100 N/mm2 on


one plane and a tensile of 50N/mm2 on a plane at right angles, together with shear
stresses of 60N/mm2 on the same planes. Find:

(a) The direction of the principal planes.


(b) The magnitude of the principal stresses.

5. A steel gun barrel is subjected to an internal pressure of 70MPa.The internal di-
ameter of the barrel is 75mm and external diameter of 225 mm. A steel band 25

8. A semi-infinite beam resting on an elastic foundation is hinged at one end and a


moment of 12N-m is applied at the hinged end. If the beam is 80 mm wide and 60
mm thick, determine the maximum deflection and stresses in the beam. Assume E
= 2x105 N/mm2 , ν = 0.30 and modulus of foundation as 8.4N/mm2 . [16]
