General technical information

1. Basic Design Elements for insulated Wires and Cables

Conductor
Consists of one or more metal wires and is used for transportation of electric current.

Round, solid (RE)

For small and medium diameter or cross-sections, made of copper (bare or tinned) up to 16 mm2 and of
aluminium up to 35 mm2. Used in single- and multi-core cables and wires for fixed installation.

Round, stranded (RM)

For medium and large cross-sections of copper-conductors from 6 mm2 and aluminium conductors from
25 mm2. Used in single- and multi-core cables and wires for fixed installation.

Round, stranded, compacted (RM)

For particularly compact conductors of medium and large cross-section made of copper from 6 mm2 and
aluminium from 25 mm2. For use in single- and multi-core cables and wires for fixed installation.

Fine or superfine-wire (F)

For all cross-sections of copper-conductors (bare or tinned). Used for flexible cables.

Sector-shaped, solid (SE)

For medium and large cross-sections of aluminium conductors up to 185 mm2. Used for 3-, 31/2- and 4-core
cables.

Sector-shaped, stranded (SM)

For medium and large cross-sections of copper and aluminium conductors from 35 mm2. Used for 3-, 31/2- and
4-core cables.

Core insulation
Covers the conductor and is used for electrical separation from the surroundings. Mainly made of extruded polymers but also of
paper, glass or minerals, varnish etc or a combination of several of these materials. Conductor and insulation together form the
core.

Inner Covering, Taping

Covers the stranded core consisting of several or many cores and is used for filling the interstices between the stranding-
elements, maintaining a round shape of the cable. The inner covering has mostly no electrical function and consists usually either
of extruded polymers, of one or more layers of tape or a combination of those elements.

Screen
Prevents electrical influences (electric fields) from reaching elements within the screen or electric fields generated by these
elements from penetrating outside by conductance. Consists of metallic tapes (e.g. copper or aluminium), laminated metallic
tapes, wires, wire braids or a combination of these elements.

Armouring
Usually arranged over the jacket, the armouring provides mechanical reinforcement of the cable jacket. The armouring protects
the interior of the cable from damage which may arise from radial forces (e.g. running over by vehicles or pressure of stones in
the cable bed etc.) Under certain circumstances, the armouring can take over or assist the electrical function of the screen. Tape
as well as round or flat wire made of galvanised steel or aluminium is usually used as armouring material. If protection against
chewing damage by rodents is merely required, thin, bare steel tapes are usually used. Non-metallic designs as protection
against chewing damage by rodents or termites are provided by reinforcing the jacket with HDPE and PP.

Sheath, Outer Covering

Functions as the outermost cover of a cable or insulated wire and is used as mechanical protection, as protection against water
penetration and as protection against chemical influences. Mostly made of extruded polymers, but also of metal (lead,
aluminium), impregnated fabric tapes etc.

General technical information

3.4 Terms for Cables relating to their behaviour in case of fire

Halogen free, no corrosive combustion gases

Is the property of a cable to consist only of materials which generate none or only small quantities of corrosive gases in the case
of fire. These gases have the result that in the event of fire, material goods are damaged without the direct effect of the fire. For
freedom from halogens it is usually necessary to meet the requirements of the applicable standard, e.g. tests according to EN
50267, IEC 60754-2 or DIN VDE 0482-267. H is added to the code of these cables and if they are enhanced flame-retardant, the
symbol FRH is added.

Flame-retardant ("self-extinguishing")
Is the property of a cable to automatically extinguish itself within a certain time after ignition by using barely flammable materials.
For flame retardancy it is usually necessary to meet the requirements of the applicable standard, e.g. the single cable test
according to EN 50265, IEC 60332-1 or DIN VDE 0482-265. If these cables are also halogen-free, H is added to the code.

Enhanced flame-retardant ("reduced fire propagation")

Is the property of a cable to severely limit the spread of flames beyond the local source of ignition in the event of fire. For
enhanced flame retardancy it is usually necessary to meet the requirements of the applicable standard, e.g. the multi-cable test
according to IEC 60332-3 Cat. C or EN 50266-2-4. The symbol FR is added to the code for these cables. If they are also
halogen-free, FRH is added to the code.

Minimum smoke emission

Is the property of a cable to generate only a minimal amount of smoke in the case of fire. For minimal smoke production it is
usually necessary to meet the requirements of the applicable standard, e.g. testing according to EN 50268, IEC 61034 or DIN
VDE 0482-268. In these tests the reduction in the permeability of light in a standardised room is measured during combustion of
the cable.

Insulation integrity on exposure to flames (e.g. FE 180)

Is the property of a low-fire-spread halogen-free cable to retain the dielectric strength (insulation capability) without mechanical
stressing for a certain time in the event of fire. Thus, the insulation integrity of the individual cable is guaranteed for a certain time
in the event of fire, but an exact determination of the duration of complete functional efficiency to be predicted in the event of fire
is not necessarily given. For the insulation integrity it is usually necessary to meet the requirements of the applicable standard,
e.g. testing according to IEC 60331 or DIN VDE 0472-814. The symbol FE is added to the code for these cables as well as the
duration in minutes during which the dielectric strength is guaranteed on exposure to flames.

Functional integrity (e.g. E30, E90)

Is the property of a cable installation to retain its functional capability for a certain time in the event of fire. It is important that the
cable is not considered alone but the entire installation including the installation materials used (clamps, channels etc). For the
functional integrity it isusually necessary to meet the requirements of the applicable standard, e.g. testing according to
DIN/ÖNORM 4102-12. The symbol E is added to the code for these cables as well as the duration in minutes for which the
functional integrity is guaranteed in the event of fire.

5.2 Permissible Installation Temperatures

When installing power cables, the cable temperature may not fall below:
- Paper insulated cables: +5 °C
- Plastic insulated cables with PVC jacket: –5 °C
- XLPE insulated cables with PE jacket: –20 °C
At lower temperatures, the cable must be sufficiently heated before laying. Care should be taken to ensure that the cable at the
core of the coil also has a sufficient temperature.

6. Current carrying capacity & voltage loss 1–30 kV

General
The layout of a cable system is basically created under consideration of two criteria: The thermal load (current carrying capacity
at which the maximum permissible conductor temperature during normal operation and short circuit conditions is not exceeded)
and the voltage loss on the cable. The bigger of these two calculated nominal conductor cross sections shall be used as
minimum conductor cross section for selecting the appropiate cable.

Thermal load
For the selection of the required nominal conductor cross section the basic current rating is used. This value is defined for the
installations "in air" and "in earth" under exactly specified conditions (load factor, ambient temperature, thermal resistance etc.).
For a wide range of deviating installation conditions, reduction factors are defined in the applicable standards. For the final layout
of the cable system, only values out of the latest issues of these standards shall be used! The neccessary data can be found
also among others in the following standards:

• ÖVE-K 516
• ÖVE-K 603
• ÖVE-K 620
• ÖVE/ÖNORM E 8200-604
• ÖVE-ÖNORM E 8200-626
• ÖVE/ÖNORM E 8200-627

General technical information

Voltage loss
Especially for bigger cable lengths (above some 100 meters length) the voltage loss plays the main role for the layout of the
cable system. For this layouting it shall considered, that the conductor temperature is increasing due to the current load and that
therefore also the conductor resistance will increase too. The maximum permissible voltage loss is usually defined in % of the
nominal network voltage. The applicable values can be taken out of the technical connection conditions resp. other equal
publications of the local utilities.

The value of the voltage loss can be calculated - if not otherwise defined - according to the following formula:

∆U = (P * L * 100 * (RW * cos ϕ + XL * sin ϕ)) / (U2 * cos ϕ)

∆U Voltage difference in % of the network voltage

P Transmitted power in kW
L Cable length in m
RW Conductor resistance in Ω/km
XL Inductive resistance in Ω/km
U Network voltage in V
