BAROMETER

By Emma S
History

 The Barometer was invented by Evangelista

Torricelli.
 The first Barometer was made in 1643.
 He found that air pressure changes day by
day.
Purpose of the Instrument
 The Barometer measures air pressure above and
below sea level.
 A change in air pressure could lead to bad weather
such as a tornado or a hurricane.
 The larger the drop in air pressure the stronger the
winds of the tornado or hurricane will be.
Description and Unit of Measure

 The unit of measure that the Barometer uses

is in inches, mill bars and millimeters.
 The parts of the Barometer include pointer,
dial, lever and the chamber.
 Barometer are usually made of wood , metal
or glass.

BAROMETERS
THE HISTORY

The barometer was invented by Evangelista

Torricelli in 1643. Evangelista Torricelli was an
Italian scientist.
DESCRIPTION

Barometers can come in many shapes and sizes

but most of them are metal with mercury
inside. Common barometers also have a dial,
scale, and the words fair, stormy, very dry, rain
and change.
PURPOSE

The purpose of the barometer is to measure air

pressure. Air pressure tells forecasters if the
air is dry or humid. Barometers measure air
pressure in inches or millibars. If the air
pressure is low it’s most likely to storm. If the
air pressure is high it’s most likely to be sunny.

Anemometers

By
Emily
History of the anemometer
• Anemometer comes from the Greek word
anemos meaning wind.
• The anemometer was invented in 1450 by
Leon Battista Alberti. He was an Italian
inventor, author, and artist.
What does an anemometer do?
• An anemometer measures wind speed and
sometimes wind pressure.
• Wind speed is measured in miles per hour.
• Wind speed measurements are important to
know in predicting weather and tracking
storms.
How does an anemometer work?
• An anemometer has 3 or 4 cups mounted on
rods of the same length, attached to a
measuring shaft. When the wind blows on the
cups they turn.
• If you count the number of turns over a period
of time you can tell the miles per hour of the
wind.
Types of anemometers
• cup anemometer
• windmill anemometer
• sonic anemometer

I am going to tell you about the
anometer. First I will tell you about
its history. Sir Francis Beaufort
invented the anometer . It was made
in 1805 to measure wind. Francis was
born in 1774 and died in 1857 he
lived to be 83 years old.

Other things used to measure wind
are sails, flags and wind vanes.

first, you cut 2strips of cardboard
now I’ll tell you how to make a
anometer . Fifth succors. Next , you
take a pencil and stab it into the
cardboard . Then, you take 4 pencils
and 4 cups and stab the pencil into
the cup then you tape it to the
cardboard. Finally, you stab another
pencil into the middle of the
cardboard and attaché the pencil to
clay and put that on cardboard. That
is all I’m going to tell you about

THE BAROMETER
By Caden
HISTORY OF THE BAROMETER

An Italian scientist named Evangelista Torricelli

made the first barometer. He filled a long skinny
tube with mercury. Then he turned it upside-
down in a plate of other mercury. The mercury
started running out but then the air pressure
made it stop running out. It was called a
mercury barometer. They are still used today.
They are the most accurate of all barometers.
On the bad side they are hard to move around
so they are mostly found in laboratories. They
measure in inches or centimeters.
BAROMETERS NOW

You can see many modern barometers on the

porches of houses. It looks like a small clock. It has
a tiny chamber inside it. Most of the air is sucked
out of it. When the air pressure outside the
barometer changes, the walls expand or shrink.
There is a lever connected to these walls so that
when they move, they move the needle on the front
of the barometer. People us these on ships . The
down side of these is that they are not as
accurate as the mercury (or liquid)
barometers.
THE PURPOSE
Barometers measure air pressure. Humans
need barometers because the readings from
these tools help meteorologists predict the
weather. They are also on airplanes because
the barometers are used to tell how high up
the plane is.
CONCLUSION

I chose barometers because I did not know much

about barometers. Barometers are very useful
and important to meteorologists in the
prediction of weather. The next time a major
storm is headed your way you can think about a
weatherman looking at his barometer.
Barometers

By Nickolas
Description and purpose of the
Barometer
The barometer is a round shaped object used to
measure air pressure. The barometer has an
arrow inside of it and depending on the air
pressure the arrow moves and points to the
current air pressure.
Unit of measure for the barometer
A barometer measures air pressure in
something called scales. They are called scales
because the air pressure goes high and low so
they call them scales.
History of the barometer
The barometer was invented in 1643 by an
Italian scientist.
