pete Aria "Per Combater"
(Madrid, ca. 1700)
[When | first heard of this Spanish work long before the 2004 publication (Spaeth/Schmid) by Friedemann Immer, many_|_
had assumed that it was a lost discovery of the composer Domenico Scarratti (1685-1757), son of the prolific compos’
of trumpet music Alessandro Scarlatti (1660-1725), who, as far as we knew, had never writen a note of music for the
trumpet instead spending his career in Spain compising many keyboard works. Then the composer assumption
became some unknown Spanish composer. However, the current thinking is that it was an unknown Italian composer
‘other than Domencio Scarlatti who found his fortunes in Spain. In any event, this aria (possibly part of a lost larger
‘cantata withthe tite “Cantata con Violin y Clarin per combater, Madrid’) is an exceptionally work with text about the
popular blind archer Amor wielding his romantic quests.
