DESCRIPTION OF FURNACE CRUCIBLE

1. SHUNTLESS (BOX) FURNACE

SHUNTLESS (BOX) FURNACE is constructed of an aluminium frame. Its

inherent simplicity makes it suitable for a wide range of melting applications,
covering sizes from 25 kgs capacity to 2000 kg capacity in design frequencies of
200 Hz to 10000 Hz. Each Shuntless (Box) furnace will consists of the following.

FURNACE FRAME:

The furnace frame is made of aluminium section, given rigidity to the box and is
welded in a prescribed manner to avoid inductive loops which could cause
excessive heat and power loss. The sides of the Box is covered with removable
type fibre glass reinforced polyester sheets.

INDUCTION COIL:

The coil is made of high efficiency electrolytic copper sections. The coil turns are
spread and insulated with special type of insulating material. The gaps between
the turns are filled with spacers to give rigidity and the coil is head in position
solidly with studs. The coil terminals are taken out to accept water cooled power
leads. The induction coil is in two parts – one active section connected to
medium frequency power and a lower cooling coil to cool the bottom refractory.

CAST REFRACTORY BOTTOM:

The furnace bottom is cast refractory of high strength laminated construction and
have centered pedestal for locating the induction coil, providing maximum
thermal insulation and strength provided by stainless steel wire reinforcement.

CAST REFRACTORY TOP:

The furnace top is cast refractory block of high strength refractory material,
providing protection for the induction coil. This block also cast with stainless
steel wire reinforcement providing strength.

TILTING FRAME:
The tilting frame is support for the removable furnace Box and is made of rolled
steel sections to give rigidity. The hydraulic cylinder is connected to this frame
and this frame is tilted along with the Box frame.

..2

:2:

STATIONARY STRUCTURE:

The tilting frame is supported fabricated steel column type structure with dual
hydraulic cylinders. The cylinders are fitted with flow control valves for tilt and
descent control.

II. HYDRAULIC POWER PACK:

One Hydraulic power pack consisting of pump, motor, oil reservoir, pressure
relief valve, flow control valves, filter and pressure gauge.

III. BUSBARS FOR FURNACE CONNECTION:

One set of busbars for connecting the power supply to the flexible water-cooled
power leads of the furnace. Completely pre-fabricated and despatched in sections
convenient for transport.

The offer includes the price of the above busbars based on a distance of 3 m.
between the power supply and the furnace. The exact price will however depend
on the final layout.

IV. FURNACE SELECTOR SWITCHES (OPTIONAL)

Modular furnace switches mounted in the power supply cubicle permit selection
of alternative furnace listed in this offer. Features include

Safety interlocks
Front access for ease of servicing
Single throw cost aluminium handle
Stand off insulators

Both the fixed contacts and the moving contacts are water cooled. Hence are
capable of carrying high currents in a compact package.
The selector switches are provided with spring loaded contacts to ensure correct
contact pressures.

ANNEXURE -IIII

SPECIAL FEATURES OF PILLAR DESIGN VAP MK 7 POWER SUPPLY

1. CIRCUIT BREAKER:

Reliable standard circuit breaker used. No special circuit breaker required

because of the use of ‘Controlled Rectifier’. Current limiting reactors
resulting in additional losses are also not required,

2. CONTROLLED RECTIFIER:

Use of SCR’s (Thyristors) for the rectifier of simple diodes, provide

smooth output level control and circuit protection.

The rectifier electronically turns off in the event of short circuit or

disturbances in the power supply or load.

Back up protection using high speed semiconductor fuses are used to limit
currents to safe levels.

3. FILTER CHOKE:

Replaces the need for a large bank of filter capacitors (a common source
of problem on other designs). An exclusive designs for greater efficiency
and reliability.

4. INVERTER;

Least number of components per kw, means higher availability. Best

power factor and efficiency achieved at all power levels by keeping the
inverter frequency slightly above the natural resonant frequency of the
load.

Better stability because ‘Turn-off-time’ for the SCR becomes longer when fresh
charge is dropped into the crucible.

5. COUPLING CAPACITORS:

Lower and safe working voltages for the power semiconductor devices
and higher voltages for the furnaces, for higher efficiencies, are matched
by coupling capacitors. Inherently more efficient and readily replaceable
in the event of a failure, as compared to large special output transformers.
..2

:2:

6. PARALLEL CONNECTED OUTPUT:

More efficient than series connected outputs requiring special matching

transformers. The heavy series current passing through the matching
transformer results in high losses and lower efficiency.

7. WATER COOLING IN POWER SUPPLY:

All water tubes are of minimum 12 mm dia. Electrolytic erosion is

prevented by non-sacrificial targets. System is designed for 45oC water
inlet.

8. CONTROL ELECTRONICS:

Control boards hard wired for withstanding vibration and adverse service
environments. Circuits specially designed for high noise immunity.

LED’s in the diagnostic board display controlling mode and malfunctions.

Memory fault circuits help in diagnosing intermittent faults.

9. EARTH LEAKAGE DETECTION::

Ground current leakage detectors with furnace profile monitor provides

safe operation.

10. POWER FACTOR:

Power factor of furnace offered is 0.93 – 0.95 as long as furnace is not run
at low power levels. System incorporates facility for altering the ratio
between coil voltage and inverter output voltage. Hence, even at low
power levels say upto 40% it is possible to run the phase controlled
rectifier in full condition, thereby keeping a good input power factor.
11. We employ a constant current source parallel resonant system. Phase
controlled rectifier using thyristors instead of plain diodes used for
variable DC voltage for the inverter. Furnace power is varied by varying
DC voltage. This permits electronic tripping in case of any fault in the
furnace or inverter. At the first signs of any fault, the rectifier is totally,
phased back. Other manufacturers employing diodes for the rectifier have
to rely on moulded case circuit breaker to trip the power in case of such
faults. These mechanical breakers have much poorer life and replacement
costs are much heavy.

12. The inverter voltage and the furnace voltage are matched by a set of
coupling capacitors in Pillar design. Other manufacturers use water cooled
matching transformer where the losses can be as high on 4-5% (about 20
time the losses of the capacitors)
