ACTY 149

Filipino’s are known for being admirable, genuine, religious, and of course being
hospitable. We all have our strength and weaknesses, that drives us into our own personality
wherein no other person can imitate. In line with this, one of the major issues that we must need
to take an action is that “why are we shallow”? There are many reasons behind this and of course
most of it are negative connotations for us, but of course there’s always a way to make that positive.

F. Sionil Jose (2011), stated an issue wherein he said that, one of the reasons why we are
shallow is because of our education system, that had diminished not just scholarship but also
excellence, he also said that there is less emphasis now on the humanities. I have no doubt that this
reason is somehow true, but if we will just look at the brighter side, we are slowly growing and
molding the students to be globally competitive. According to the World Education News and
Reviews (WENR), in 2013, the Philippine government initiated the extension of the country’s
basic education cycle from ten to twelve years- a major reform that former Education Secretary
Armin Luistro has called “the most comprehensive basic education reform initiative ever done in
the country since the establishment of the public education system more than a century ago”.
Which tells us that we are slowly growing, and the students are trained to be globally competitive
so that the excellence in the Philippines will be known globally. The Philippines already produced
a lot of people wherein they are recognized globally because of their excellence. According to the
m2scoial net, one of the is Ramon Barbara, an inventor ad horticulturalist from San Nicolas, Ilocos
Norte, he was best known for his mango flower induction technology that made mangoes available
all year round with the use of ethrel and potassium nirate, was awarded as one of Southeast Asian’s
top agricultural scientist. Another one is Arianwen Rollan form Cebu, she was acknowledged in
2016 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (IISEF), regarded as the world’s biggest
science research for her study on the tumor-curing properties of malunggay seeds. These people
are just some of the and we should be proud of that. And also, humanities in being taught at the
tertiary level so that we can be more aware and matured before entering the real world after college.
Reading is the most essential thing to do because it can give us a lot of information, and it
gives us a lot or trivia and facts that we don’t know yet. Another reason that F. Sionil Jose give
why we are shallow is because we don’t read. He said that most of us loves to read entertainment
magazines, and of course to check on our phones wherein information is being served to us
immediately, in line with that he said that people at the bus or train are holding newspaper,
magazines, and phones. I would like to say that trains and busses at the Philippines are not that
convenient, because I admit that we are not advance when it comes to technology and we lack
some resources for it. Unlike the other countries that you can read at the busses and trains, because
here those mode of transportation is so crowded, because Filipino’s tend to be workaholic wherein
they stay up late for work and then rise in the early of the morning to meet their time. Wherein
their works they tend to read a lot especially those people who works at schools, offices, publishing
company, and Filipino’s are always updated in what’s new and latest because they love to read
and scroll.

To sum it all, the Filipino’s are unique in terms of expressing their interest over a thing,
some people just can’t see our efforts to do the things that we are not used to. We need to see the
brighter side of the story wherein we put a lot of efforts to develop our educations system, ways
of living, and how we spend our day. We can’t monitor each one of us but I am sure that we’re
juts buying time to figure out our needs to improve ourselves, our society, and our country.
