MODULE TITLE: DRAFTING AND CUTTING PATTERN FOR LADIES CASUAL APPAREL
MODULE DESCRIPTOR: This module covers the knowledge, skills and attitudes in drafting
and cutting patterns of casual apparel. It details the requirements for planning garment
design, taking body measurements, drafting basic/block pattern, manipulating and cutting
final pattern.

1. Read information sheet # 1.3.2 • If you cannot understand the content of the
information sheet or any part of it, you ask your
trainer to assist you or you can participate in group
discussion or lecture.

In the previous information Sheet we have discussed the Selection of Pattern Tools in
Drafting Basic/Block Pattern, Drafting pattern tools are selected in accordance with job
requirements,
Basic/Block pattern is drafted using appropriate equipment and customer’s specifications
and Drafted basic/block pattern is checked for accuracy based on customer’s specification.
In this lesson you will be introduced to the Selection of Pattern Tools in Drafting
basic/block pattern and the Selection of pattern tools.

Measuring tools:
1. Tape measure-a length of tape or thin flexible metal, marked at intervals for measuring.
3. L-Square Ruler-Used to transfer measurements to the draft pattern. Divides the garment
into the desired measurement. It has perfect squares and is useful in making straight lines
and numbers. It can also function as a tape measure.
Drafting tools:
1.Tailor’s chalk-hard chalk or soapstone used in tailoring and dressmaking for marking fabric.
6.French curve- is one of the several curves used for shaping arm hole and neck line.
8. Scissors-Sewing scissors should consist of those for cutting fabric and those for cutting
paper such as pattern paper and cutting the actual pattern that is going to be used away from
the pattern sheet. Scissors for cutting fabric should never be used for cutting paper, because
this can dull these scissors. Sewing scissors are also referred to as trimming scissors,
because they are used to trim and clip seams and facings and also to trim away excess fabric.
These scissors generally have about a six inch blade.
