Dear Josh,

I would first like to begin by saying thank you. You taught me a good deal about writing
and reading comprehension. You read my papers and provided beneficial feedback that truly
helped during the course of the quarter. I appreciate all the work you put in for me, as well as the
rest of the class.
At the start of the quarter, I was overconfident and fancied my writing abilities. However,
as the class continued, I soon realized I had a lot to learn. The first major topic we discussed was
genre. A fairly simple topic, or so I thought. After we debated over the definition of genre and
discussed the factors that create the general structure, I came to the realization that this was no
ordinary class. Throughout high school english and writing classes, we were assigned a
multiplicity of terms to memorize, and that’s all we were tasked to do, simple memorization.
Never did we ask the “why” questions or discuss our understanding of the topic. However,
Writing 2 differed, the very first day we asked the “why” question and from that point forward I
knew this was a class that I could learn a thing or two from.
Although Writing 2 has taught me many important techniques regarding writing and
reading comprehension, the most valuable thing I learned was the process of revising my work.
Before entering this course, I hardly revised my papers, I rarely even re-read my essays for that
matter. However, through this course, I have learned the importance of revision. Through
revision, I am able to take a step back and re-envision my paper. I am able to reflect upon my
goals of the paper and determine whether I have accomplished these goals. Revision allows me
to ensure my ideas were expressed and supported correctly. Through this process, I am given the
opportunity for peer-review. This allows me to receive an outside perspective which has proven
to be tremendously helpful. Lastly, it allows me to fulfill a different role in the writing process. I
transition from writer to reader, which makes all the difference. As a reader, I am able to
question myself about the context, importance, and purpose of the paper. Revising my papers is
extremely beneficial and is a tool that I will most certainly value for the rest of my life.
Although my writing style has not undergone drastic alteration, it has changed in certain
aspects. I believe this course has definitely made me a more conscientious writer. I have also
learned how to utilize rhetoric by understanding my intended audience and understanding the
importance of my argument. Now that the course has concluded, I would define my personal
writing style as detailed, descriptive, and narrative. Within most of my writings, I enjoy telling a
story, as evident in the high school story I utilized in the paragraph above. I also enjoy catching
the reader’s attention by beginning my papers unorthodoxly. That is either through the use of a
question, bold statement, or personal experience. Through my writings, I strive to be personal
because I believe it strengthens the bond between the reader and writer, a tactic that is beneficial
when writing a paper.
When asked to complete a final portfolio with two revisions, I decided on Writing Project
1 and 2. I chose these projects because I wanted to demonstrate the skills I had learned
throughout the course of the class. I began with WP1 and immediately made changes to the
introductory paragraph. In class we discussed the importance of cohesion. I wanted the purpose
of my essay to be evident within the entirety of my paper, especially in the introduction. I added
a sentence that created a transition from a grabber rhetorical question to a statement that
showcased my purpose of the essay. I also included a sentence that linked Instagram bios to
contemporary genres. This would allow the reader to completely understand the purpose of my
work. I also made slight changes, that transitioned the essay from descriptive to expository. I also
included sentences that explained the purpose of Instagram bios. This led me to my next issue.
Prior to my revision, I knew it was important for me to explain the significance of the antecedent
genre and the intended audience. I included a paragraph that explains the intended audience and
how that it ultimately shapes the structure of the genre. I ended my revision by adding a passage
within the conclusion that discussed the variety of contemporary genres and the effect it has on
our society.
The next project I decided to revise was WP2. During the initial writing of WP2, I
struggled with the conventions of an academic discipline. I kept this in mind as I began my
revision. The first major addition I included was a reflective essay. This would provide reasoning
to the choices I made throughout the assignment. Within the introduction of the paper, I took out
sentences that were not appropriate for this type of paper. I replaced these sentences with
statements that introduced my academic discipline and explained the purpose of my work.
Within my body paragraphs, I made sure to add sentences that elaborated on the significance of
writing conventions, peer-reviewed articles, and literary devices. I also included sentences at the
end of most paragraphs that explained the importance of the subject at hand to the overall
discipline of psychology. Throughout WP1 and WP2, I made certain to include statements that
would create cohesion, add explanations, and strengthen the purpose of my arguments.
This final portfolio demonstrates the knowledge I have acquired throughout the course of
Writing 2. This includes genre, writing conventions, cohesion, coherence, reader review, and of
course revision. All of these factors will contribute to my growth as a writer. I know without a
doubt that I will utilize all that I have learned from this course in future writing classes, and even
more importantly… in life.

Best Regards,
Jeremy Pritchett
