CLASSIFICATION OF STEELS FOR WELDED STRUCTURES AS REGARDS WELDING

ITN03402.01
METHODS

1. PURPOSE AND APPLICABILITY

1.1. The purpose of this specification is that of classifying the materials most commonly used for
constructing welded structures, in order to facilitate the utilization of ITN 03402.02 and ITN
03402.03, specifications for welding metal structures of Class 1 and of Class 2 respectively.
It should not therefore be considered as guide to the selection of materials to be used for
construction, but rather a classification of such materials as regards welding.

1.2. Classification has been made taking as main reference the EN materials which, in general, are
classificable without the need for additional requirements.

1.3. The materials with specifications different from those of UNI materials are classificable by the
introduction, when necessary, of additional requirements.

1.4. The table listing some materials classified into the various groups and grades is also to be
considered as purely indicative. As regards welding, the designer engineer is any case
responsible for classification of the material, in relation to its chemical/physical characteristics
and to the conditions of utilization of the structure.

1.5. The following types of products are dealt with in this specification:

-Electronically Approved Drawing-Checked:Costantino, S.,Approved:Guerrini, M.- Internal DT-'N'

L = hot rolled sheet
P = hot-rolled sections
Tss = seamless pipes
Ts = welded pipes
T = Ts or Tss

1.6. T h e m a t e r i a l s a r e f e r r i t i c s t e e l s ( c a r b o n s t e e l , c a r b o n -m a n g a n e s e s t e e l o r l o w a l l o y - s t e e l ) , l o w
alloy chrome steel and austenitic ferritic and martensitic stainless steels.

2. FERRITIC STEELS

2.1. Ferritic steels are divided into five Groups, (AO,A,B,C,DO) on the basis of their chemical
characteristics and tensile strength. The five Groups are subdivided in grades on the basis of
their toughness characteristics.

2.3. Within each individual Group, the steels of a certain Grade can be utilized in place of those of
a lower Grade.

2.4. Equivalent carbon will be calculated by the formula:

C eq = C + Mn/6 + (Cr+Ni+V)/5 + (Ni+Cu)/15

2.5. The values given in Table 1 for the Charpy-V strength test refer to the arithmetic mean of the
results obtained on three test pieces taken side by side, lengthwise in the rolling direction.
The individual value of each test shall not be less than 70% of the prescribed value. If the
mean value of the results on three strength test pieces or on single value is lower than the
required value, three supplementary test pieces shall be taken from the specimen, and the
tests shall be repeated on them. The test is considered positive if the mean value of the 6
results is at least equal to the required value and no more than two values are lower than
those required for the individual values.

3. LOW-ALLOY CHROME MOLYBDENUM STEELS

Low -alloy chrome molybdenum steels belong to a single group, termed Group D, and are split into
four grades according to chemical analysis as indicated in Table 2.
