COLONIAL LITERATURE (1565 – 1863)

• The roots of Philippine literature may be traced back to pre-colonial

times.
• Long before the Spaniards came to the Philippines, the Philippines had
already a way of writing and an established society with respected
leaders.
• Oral transmission was the primary means of communicating and
preserving Philippine literature.

RELIGIOUS LYRIC POEMS
• Lyric poetry is a formal type of poetry which
expresses personal emotions or feelings,
typically spoken in the first person. The term
derives from a form of Ancient Greek literature,
the lyric, which was defined by its musical
accompaniment, usually on a stringed
instrument known as a lyre

METRICAL ROMANCE

Highly precise and structured poem

Korido | octosyllabic, four-line stanza

Awit |made for singing and chanting;
dodecasyllabic, four line stanza
Francisco Balagtas’ FLORANTE AT
LAURA is the most prominent awit of
alll time.

IBONG ADARNA, korido, staple

reading of high school Filipino
students up to the present time.
Nationalistic
and
Propaganda
Period
(1864 – 1896)
• In the last half century of Spanish occupation,
literature became a fertile ground for the
expressions of a growing nationalist
consciousness.

• The emergence of different genres such as:

• Essays
• Novels
• The emergence of different Filipino writers:
• Marcelo H. Del Pilar – popularized the Essay as a literary
form. Together with Graciano Lopez Jaena, they wrote
about the truth, the suffering of the colonized.
• Pedro M. Paterno – wrote the first Filipino Novel, Ninay.
• Jose P. Rizal – wrote two political novels, Noli Me
Tangere and El Filibusterismo, which would be the
starting point for any subsequent consideration of
Philippine Nationalism.
•What then became the
purpose of literature
during the nationalistic
and propaganda period?
