The birds have less to say for themselves Heaven gives it glimpses only to those

That was a thing we could not wait to learn. We may as well go patiently on with our life,
We saw the risk we took in doing good, And look elsewhere than to stars and moon and sun
But dared not spare to do the best we could For the shocks and changes we need to keep us sane.
Though harm should come of it; so built the screen It is true the longest drouth will end in rain,
You had begun, and gave them back their shade. The longest peace in China will end in strife.
All this to prove we cared. Why is there then Still it wouldn't reward the watcher to stay awake
No more to tell? We turned to other things.
In hopes of seeing the calm of heaven break
I haven't any memory--have you?--
On his particular time and personal sight.
Of ever coming to the place again
To see if the birds lived the first night through, That calm seems certainly safe to last to-night.
And so at last to learn to use their wings.
Our Singing Strength
Not to Keep
It snowed in spring on earth so dry and warm

An Old Man's Winter Night

All out of doors looked darkly in at him
Through the thin frost, almost in separate stars, Was there even a cause too lost,
That gathers on the pane in empty rooms. Ever a cause that was lost too long,
What kept his eyes from giving back the gaze Or that showed with the lapse of time to vain
Was the lamp tilted near them in his hand. For the generous tears of youth and song?
What kept him from remembering what it was
That brought him to that creaking room was age. In Neglect
He stood with barrels round him -- at a loss.
And having scared the cellar under him They leave us so to the way we took,
In clomping there, he scared it once again As two in whom them were proved mistaken,
In clomping off; -- and scared the outer night, That we sit sometimes in the wayside nook,
Which has its sounds, familiar, like the roar With michievous, vagrant, seraphic look,
Of trees and crack of branches, common things, And try if we cannot feel forsaken.
But nothing so like beating on a box.
Iota Subscript Oven Bird, The
Seek not in me the bit I capital, There is a singer everyone has heard,
Not yet the little dotted in me seek. Loud, a mid-summer and a mid-wood bird,
If I have in me any I at all, Who makes the solid tree trunks sound again.
'Tis the iota subscript of the Greek. He says that leaves are old and that for flowers
Mid-summer is to spring as one to ten.
So small an I as an attention beggar. He says the early petal-fall is past
The letter you will find me subscript to When pear and cherry bloom went down in showers
Is neither alpha, eta, nor omega, On sunny days a moment overcast;
But upsilon which is the Greek for you. And comes that other fall we name the fall.

Lockless Door, The The bird would cease and be as other birds

Peaceful Shepard, The
I blew out the light,
I tip-toed the floor, If heaven were to do again,

But the knock came again

I should be tempted to forget,
I climbed on the sill
And descended outside. I fear, the Crown of Rule,

I bade a “Come in”

The Cross, the Crown, the Scales may all

Pasture, The
Lodged I'm going out to clean the pasture spring;
I'll only stop to rake the leaves away
The rain to the wind said, (And wait to watch the water clear, I may):
'You push and I'll pelt.' I sha'n't be gone long.--You come too.
They so smote the garden bed
That the flowers actually knelt,
And lay lodged--though not dead. I'm going out to fetch the little calf
I know how the flowers felt. That's standing by the mother. It's so young,
It totters when she licks it with her tongue.

'Out, Out–'
The buzz-saw snarled and rattled in the yard

And then--the watcher at his pulse took fright. She took a doubtful step and then undid it

Pan With Us He said to gain time: 'What is it you see,'

The foliage follow him, leaf and stem;

And they end by bidding them as they go, We never shall mow in again,
And they end by bidding him stay with them. Or such is the talk at the farmhouse:
The meadow is finished with men.
Since ever they flung abroad in spring Then now is the chance for the flowers
The leaves had promised themselves this flight, That can't stand mowers and plowers.
Who now would fain seek sheltering wall, It must be now, through, in season
Or thicket, or hollow place for the night. Before the not mowing brings trees on,
Before trees, seeing the opening,
And now they answer his summoning blast March into a shadowy claim.
With an ever vaguer and vaguer stir, The trees are all I'm afraid of,
Or at utmost a little reluctant whirl That flowers can't bloom in the shade of;
That drops them no further than where they were. It's no more men I'm afraid of;
The meadow is done with the tame.
I only hope that when I am free The place for the moment is ours
As they are free to go in quest For you, oh tumultuous flowers,
Of the knowledge beyond the bounds of life To go to waste and go wild in,
It may not seem better to me to rest. All shapes and colors of flowers,
I needn't call you by name.
Out in the plowed ground in the cold a digger, "Sh! not so loud: he'll hear you," Mary said.
Among unearthed potatoes standing still,
