1. Pendahuluan

1.1. Deskripsi Singkat

English semester learning plan on the 9th subject discusses :

1. Able to read tables containing information about technical material

2. Being able to make a definition of material that contains information about the
nature and usefulness of technical material

1.2. Relevansi

The relevance that we can get by studying English with this 9th subject we can:
The presence of material engineering at the present time is urgently needed to
save professionals in the field of material science and technology, because Indonesia
is currently implementing a development based on five pillars, including materials
science.

Irreversible, meaning that all industries need material disciplines. Acting as

industrial engineers, both as a support unit (maintenance) and "backbone" (producing
material). Both are roles that are needed in the industrial sector in Indonesia.
1.3. Capaian Pembelajaran

1. Students master several types of materials in mechanical engineering

2. Students master basic English skills that include listening, reading,
speaking, and defining material skills in relation to machining techniques
3. Students can apply basic English skills which include: the ability to
explain several materials; read and define the nature and usefulness of
engineering materials in machining techniques

1.4. Petunjuk Pembelajaran

BA | INGGRIS 2
Learning instruction can be done by reading and understanding the text so that we can find
specific information in the text about the nature and usefulness of engineering material
2. Penyajian

Ferrous Metal
Ferro metal is ferrous metal (Fe). Iron is an important metal in engineering, but pure iron is
too soft and brittle as a work material, construction material and others. Therefore iron is
always mixed with other elements, especially carbon or carbon (C).

Non-metal material
CERAMIC
Classification of ceramics:
ORGANIC material not METAL; Use and use at high temperatures
Material from METAL compounds; (oxide, barida, carbide and nitride)
The use of ceramics usually for insulators, abrasive components, can be used as a thermal
barrier layer eg Fireproof Stone (BTA). Ceramic is a mixture of metal elements and non-
metal elements, generally in the form of oxides, nitrides and carbides. Materials classified as
ceramics are generally composed of clay minerals, cement and glass.
Glass is a transparent object, quite strong, usually does not react with chemicals, and is not
biologically active which can be formed with a very smooth and waterproof surface. Because
of its ideal nature, glass is widely used in many fields of life. But the glass can break into
sharp pieces. The nature of this glass can be modified and can even be changed entirely by
chemical processes or by heating.
character :
1. Aesthetic nature or beauty
2. Optically transparent (transparent)
3. Elasticity
4. Nature of resistance to substances / chemical reactions
Application: building materials, kitchen and laboratory equipment

Ceramic Properties:

BA | INGGRIS 3
common properties and easily seen physically in most types of ceramics are britle or brittle,
this can be seen in traditional types of ceramics such as glassware, glass, jugs, pottery and so
on, try to drop plates made of ceramic compare with plates from metals, certainly ceramics
break easily, although these properties do not apply to certain types of ceramics, especially
the types of ceramics produced by sintering, and the sintering mix between ceramics and
metals. other properties are high temperature resistance, for example traditional ceramics
consisting of clay, flint and feldfar hold up to temperatures of 1200 C, engineering ceramics
such as oxide ceramics are able to withstand temperatures up to 2000 C. High compressive
strength, this property is one of the factors that make research on ceramics continue to grow.
very stable against chemicals, non-toxic and friction resistant.
Application: Kitchen / Oven Components (furnaces), buildings, Gas Turbine Components,
Heat Insulators, etc.

General Properties of Ceramics

- hard and brittle
- Low tensile strength
- High Compressive Strength
- Good isolator
- Corrosion resistant
- Resistant to high temperatures

POLYMER
Polymers include plastic and rubber materials. The most commonly known polymers are
organic polymers composed of long carbon chains, hydrogen and nonmetallic elements. Also
known as inorganic polymers whose main constituent does not consist of carbon atoms.
example: rubber, nylon, epoxy, teflon
properties: soft, lightweight,
application:
Teflon is one of the polymers that are widely used by humans. Teflon does not contain
hydrogen atoms, only carbon and fluorine. This property causes almost no substance that can
react with Teflon. Other properties, Teflon has a low coefficient of friction and does not get
wet if liquid is included. That is why Teflon is used as a cooking utensil.

BA | INGGRIS 4
Teflon is a trademark of plastic polytetrafluoroethene. This plastic is hard, rigid, heat resistant
(melting point 3200C), and resistant to chemicals. Teflon is used as a coating for cooking
utensils, irons and tools used in the process of producing food, beverages and chemicals.
The polymer classification can be divided based on:
Source or origin
- Nature: animals, plants and minerals
- Synthetic: the resulting polymerization of the addition polymer

2.2. Latihan

By trying to understand the classification of our own technical materials, for example non-
metal materials can be concluded that the composition and types of non-metal material can be
divided into several parts

3.1. Rangkuman

We can summarize, that English semester learning plan on the 9th subject discusses :
 Metal Material (Metal Material)
Ordinary metal materials are divided into iron and steel (iron) and nonferrous metals. Iron
and steel contain Fe (iron) and C (carbon). Iron and steel is still an important material in
mechanical engineering. Reasons why iron and steel are important materials because raw
materials are easy to obtain and mechanical properties are easily engineered. On the other
hand, nonferrous metals are developing in the field of mechanical engineering. It could be
that nonferrous metals are as important as iron and steel. This might occur because of the
specific properties required by chemical elements composed of nonferrous metals.

Metal materials are composed of one or more metal elements which are mixed with relatively
higher non-metal elements. For example, the metal element Fe mixes with non-metal
elements C into iron and steel. Other examples of metal elements such as aluminum, copper,
titanium, gold and nickel. Other examples of non-metallic elements such as nitrogen and
oxygen.

 Non-Metallic Material (Non-Metallic Material)

Nonmetallic material is divided into polymers, glass and ceramics, as well as semiconductors.
Polymers consist of plastic and rubber. Today, polymers have begun to develop into one of
the important materials in the field of mechanical engineering, important because of their low
specific weight. While ceramics and glass are mostly composed of oxides, nitrides and
carbides. Ceramics are usually used as cutting material. Semiconductors are materials that
have intermediate electrical properties between the conductor and the insulator.

BA | INGGRIS 6
 Composite Material
Composite material is a material composed of two or more materials. Composite materials
have the advantage of being sturdy and strong. This material is often used in aircraft
components, space equipment, sports equipment, and car bumpers.

3.2. Test Formatif

what is the content in iron and the reasons why iron and steel are often used in machining?

1.3 Kunci Jawaban Teks Formatif

Metal materials are usually divided into iron and steel (ferrous) and nonferrous metals.
Iron and steel contain Fe (iron) and C (carbon). Iron and steel is still an important
material in mechanical engineering. The reason why iron and steel are important
materials is because the raw materials are easy to obtain and the mechanical properties
