School Crest and Motto
The colours of the school crest are those of the Coat of Arms of Sir
Stamford Raffles: Green, White and Black. The open book symbolises
knowledge and the burning torch our commitment to forge character
and develop lifeskills.

The school’s motto, Filiae Melioris Aevi, emblazoned across the crest, is
Latin for Daughters of a Better Age. It is our pledge to the community
that girls who pass through the portals of RGS will not simply inherit
a fine tradition but will actively forge a finer future for her community.

RGS Cengal Award 2015
The Cengal Award, inaugurated in 2011, is presented to an individual or organisation in
recognition and appreciation of the valued partnership and meaningful contribution to RGS
through the educational programmes and activities that nurture RGS girls as Daughters of
a Better Age.
Cengal, a tall hardwood tree indigenous to South East Asia is very much a part of the
Singaporean heritage, having lent its name to the area of Changi. Cengal wood is valued
for its strength and has been selected as an appropriate symbol of the sustained support,
contribution and collaboration these valued friends and partners have rendered to our
school and our students over the years.
This year, one individual and four organisations are being recognised for their partnerships
with RGS.

Individual Award
Ms Han Juat Hoon
Ms Han stands out as an alumna who approached the school to express her desire to give
back through a seven-figure donation to the Raffles Programme and RGS’ New Campus
Development Fund. To date, no one individual has made such a substantial contribution
to the school. Through her humility and gracious generosity, she serves as a veritable role
model for our students.

Organisation Award
Apple
Address: UE BizHub Central, 12 Ang Mo Kio Street 64, Singapore 569088
Apple has been a pillar of support for RGS since the school introduced 1:1 computing
in 2010, notably in manpower resource and expertise. During the pilot phase of the
programme, Apple provided the school with Macbooks and iPads over a period of two
years. In the run up to the launch of RGS 1:1, Apple arranged for professional development
sessions for RGS staff members. Two of Apple’s consultants were invited in 2011 to train
RGS staff in 1:1 computing in their subject-disciplines. Over the years, Apple has regularly
provided professional development workshops for RGS staff to deepen their expertise. In
particular, Apple kept close contact with RGS via their staff member who was in constant
conversation with RGS regarding the school’s implementation needs and concerns.

Centre for Biomedical Ethics, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University
of Singapore
Address: Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, Block MD11, #02-01, Clinical Research Centre,
10 Medical Drive, Singapore 117597
For the past three years, the NUS Bioethics Centre has provided RGS with relevant articles
and resource persons to speak about diverse real-life cases involving various aspects of
scientific human enhancement. Their contributions have helped ground the class discussion
on actual contemporary cases, making the lessons more accessible and relevant to the
girls. These real-life scientific cases brought in by the resource speakers from the Centre
complemented the theoretical aspect of ethical instruction provided by the RGS staff. The
students are also given opportunities to interact, share and learn from the perspective of

[ 16 ] Raffles Girls’ School

students in their age group who belong to a different culture. This partnership between RGS
and the NUS Bioethics Centre helped nurture RGS girls who are not only knowledgeable
about the ethical issues involving human enhancement, but are also cognisant of how
these issues play out in the lives of real people in the real world.

FaithActs
Address: Blk 50 Commonwealth Drive #01-506, Singapore 142050
FaithActs collaborated with RGS in developing the Year 1 Values-in-Action (VIA) Learning
Journey. As part of the VIA preparation, FaithActs provided information on the needs of
the community in the area. They were the liaison between the school and homeowners
(“home cleaning”), National Environment Agency (“block cleaning”) and management of
hawker centres (“hawker centre clean-up”). During the activities, they provided space for
pre-activity briefings as well as on-the-ground support for staff and students. They also
assisted in providing transportation from the gathering point to activity venues. Both staff
and students benefitted from the hands-on experience, developing a deeper understanding
of the role and responsibility of man to his environment as well as a deeper appreciation
for the oft-overlooked members of the community. Staff and students were also able to
derive a sense of fulfilment from the meaningful service they provided as well as from the
interactions with the people in the community, thanks to FaithActs who has played a key
role in the development and execution of the Y1 VIA Learning Journey.

ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute

Address: 30 Heng Mui Keng Terrace, Singapore 119614
ISEAS has been providing RGS students with work experience opportunities since 2011. In
2011, these opportunities include allowing students to be engaged in research, academic
discourses and publishing in a real-life setting. The skills and knowledge that these students
acquired through the attachment covered the whole gamut of academic publishing: copy-
editing; proofreading; understanding of intellectual property and rights including reprint
and translation rights; typesetting; printing; binding; e-publishing; book promotion and
catalogue production; subscriptions; distribution and trade discounts; and warehousing.
Other than being given hands-on tasks of proofreading and copyediting manuscripts,
RGS students even tried their hand at designing a book cover for ASEAN Day 2011 and
strategising on ways to market a new book. Since 2012, the partnership was extended
to the ISEAS Library, where students learnt about conservation work, transcription and
synopsis writing of oral history, the packaging of selective web pages and scripting of info-
alerts, digitisation of contents for online access, metadata tagging for new acquisition, as
well as technical aspects of collection management: processing private records, stock-take
and conservation of books, as well as users and usage profiling to build up databases.
Students were, therefore, able to experience not only the different aspects of academic
research, but also help create content relevant to the Humanities disciplines throughout the
course of their attachment. This has invariably deepened their interest in and understanding
of Southeast Asia and research opportunities related to this region.

Filiae Melioris Aevi

Speech Day Report 2014/2015 [ 57 ]

Love RGS: One Heart, One Voice
The following poems are winning entries from the Love RGS: One Heart, One Voice poetry
writing competition. These original compositions express the students’ love for the school,
and celebrate the school’s 136th Founder’s Day. The poems help to weave together this
year’s concert items, to present the RGS narrative.

Aria

Light bursts forth, radiant. New voices sing

silent, then stronger, and a song takes wing
Dawn moves: a dance. Voices merge, blend together
into a multitude of colours; an iridescent splendor.

From dawn to dawn we rise; we move with the winds

our souls dance in sunlight, a blessed golden tint
that kindles our spirit and shines bright through the song
From passion everlasting, we rise upward, strong.

Fierce drumming heartbeats move deeply beneath -

the power of thousands. And fire is unleashed -
of youth’s gold elixir, flowing through our veins.
Roots twine round our past while wings lift us to fame.

Paths lead out of darkness, from footsteps long past.

Memories sing from years gone, yet forever they’ll last -
They gild our spirits, forged silver with beliefs,
as our echoes and whispers still ride on the breeze.

And one voice carries through, out of a harmony pure

The book turns another page; through the years we soar.
One heart carries on, and we sing through the night
Filiae Melioris Aevi, and so our souls take flight.

- Kimberly Tan (401) and Alison Tan (407)

One Heart, One Voice

There are two different houses from which I hail

And two families to which I belong
A constant pulse and its rhythm prevail
Two hearts now beating to harmonious song

A sister at heart, a daughter of the world

I take courage, for dreamers soar freely
I’ll proudly proclaim I’m a Raffles girl
And make the dreams true in reality

Anchored but free with deep roots and strong wings,

Gracefully poised and eager to take flight,
I embrace my identity, which rings
true, and at last I let my light shine bright.

Stepping through the gate, I make my choice

I choose to join my sisters - one heart, one voice.

- Natasha Rae Zuzarte (306)
