ASSIGNMENT – 2

MCE-NUST Fluid Mechanics-II

Deadline: Monday 4th November 2019 (1500hrs) OD-90 / CED-91

Q1: Water at a temperature of 15oC flows through a faucet of 35mm opening into a standard
16-oz glass (16-oz = 4.73x10-4 m3). Determine

(a) Minimum time taken to fill the glass if the flow is laminar
(b) Maximum time taken to fill the glass if the flow is turbulent
(c) Repeat the calculations for min and max time to fill the glass if the water temperature rises up
to 80oC

Q2: The velocity profile in a fully developed laminar flow in a circular pipe of radius 2 cm in
m/s is given by v(r) = 6 [1 – ( )2 ]. Determine.

(a) Mean velocity

(b) Maximum velocity
(c) The distance from the centre of the pipe where the instantaneous velocity is equal to
mean velocity.

Q3: Water is flowing inside a 3cm dia circular pipe. Calculate the

(a) Largest possible entrance length for laminar flow

(b) Smallest possible entrance length for turbulent flow

Q4: A municipality want to supply its water treatment plant with 10,000m3/day of fresh water
through an asbestos cement pipeline with a diameter of 50cm. The new asbestos cement pipe line
has absolute roughness 0.3mm, however as it gets old, in a few years the specific roughness
increases up to 2.5mm (use Moody Chart). The average summer water temperature is 30oC and
average winter temperature is 5oC. Determine the pressure drop for all seasons and for new and
old pipe and complete the following table if the length of the pipe is 1.2km. Also write
comments about your findings on using the pipe in summer/winters over a long period of time.

Q5: A piping system delivering water at 10°C from pressurised tank 1 to tank 2. Initially
plastic pipe with negligible roughness having 1cm diameter has a slightly rounded entrance, a
fully open globe valve, two 90º smooth flanged bends, and a sudden expansion at the 1/3 of the
pipe length (having loss coefficient 0.71). After expansion, Galvanized Iron (GI) pipe is installed
with 2.5cm diameter and along the GI pipe, there are two 90º mitter bends (loss coefficient 1.1),
a 1/3 open ball valve and a sharp exit. The total pipe length is 20 m. Determine the pressure at
tank 1 required to deliver water at 2.7 litre/min. {Calculate friction factor mathematically}

Q6: Multiple piping systems (next lecture)
