Introduction:

Attitudes are judgments. They develop on the ABC model (affect, behavior, and
cognition).The affective response is an emotional response that expresses an individual's
degree of preference for an entity. The behavioral intention is a verbal indication or typical
behavioral tendency of an individual. The cognitive response is a cognitive evaluation of the
entity that constitutes an individual's beliefs about the object. Most attitudes are the result of
either direct experience or observational learning from the environment.

Concept:

An attitude is a hypothetical construct that represents an individual's degree of like or dislike


for an item. Attitudes are generally positive or negative views of a person, place, thing, or
event—this is often referred to as the attitude object. People can also be conflicted or
ambivalent toward an object, meaning that they simultaneously possess both positive and
negative attitudes toward the item in question.

What is Attitude?

Attitude is the tendency of an individual to evaluate certain things which can be favorable or
of unfavorable manner. An attitude is mental state of readiness, learning and organized
through experience a specific control on person’s response to people, object and situations
with which it is related. By attitudes we mean the beliefs, feelings object ideas and people.

An attitude can be defined as a determined leaning to feel and behave in a particular way
toward some object. (luthans)

Formation of attitudes:

Types of attitude:

a) Job satisfaction: It refers to an individual’s general attitude toward his or her job.
b) Organizational commitment: Organization commitment refers to the power of an
employee’s involvement in the organization.

Component of attitude:

• Cognitive component: the opinion or belief segment of an attitude.

• Affective component: the emotional or felling segment of an attitude.

• Behavioral component: an intention to behave in a certain way toward someone or


something.

Positive Attitude:

Positive attitude strongly influences the mentality and motivates to set a goal to live.

Benefits:

• Increases productivity.

• Solves problems.

• Improves quality.

• Breeds loyalty.

• Reduces stress.

• Makes for pleasing personality.

• Fosters team work and better relationship.

• All leads to happier life.

Negative Attitude:

Negative attitude pulls your character down, poisons your quality & seizes good relationship.

Consequences:

• Resentment

• A purposeless life

• Ill-health

• High stress levels for themselves and others

How to change negative attitude:


• Understand your own drives and passions

• Communicate with others according to their attitude

• Appreciate the differences in each of us, learning to value positively instead of judging
negatively

• Understand the causes of conflict and be able to diffuse the situation

• Capability to recognise the other's attitude and see the world through their eyes.
