For high temperature system, touch up of inorganic zinc silicate shall be done with zinc rich epoxy,
excepting substrates with operating temperature is higher than 80 deg. C, in this case a zinc silicate
primer shall be used. The surface shall be prepared and painting shall be reinstated such that the
furnished coating complies with this specification.
(5) Where an abrasive blast cleaning is recognized as impossible, mechanical or manual surface
preparation to ISO 8501-1 grade St 3 could be applied for touch-up and field jointed areas.
(6) Any repair procedure shall be submitted for approval, in writing to Contractor prior to commencement
of the work.
Extent of painting works at Vendor shop and at Construction site shall be referred to APPENDIX 6 of this
specification.
Throughout the duration of the work, the Vendor or Paint Contractor shall check the following points and
recorded in the paint daily report
• Dry film thickness of each coat and of the complete painting system as per ISO 19840
Readings shall take into account roughness since calibration is done on smooth plate. Then
thickness is given by the following formula:
• Curing test for zinc silicates as per ASTM D4752. Only level 5 is acceptable (no trace of zinc).
• Conductivity test for blasting abrasives shall be assessed according to ASTM D4940 and shall
be less than 150 µS/cm for emerged zone and 30 µS/cm for immersed zone.
• Appearance of the final coat such as Cracking, Bubbling, Pin-holes, Run, Sags, color etc. shall
be checked.
• Adherence test

The adherence test shall be carried out on three steel test plate (dimensions 250 x 150 x 5mm). Surface
preparation, paint application shall be done at the same time and in the same conditions than the item to
be painted.
Test shall be carried out after full curing the painting system (21 days at 20 deg. C) or according to
manufacturer’s recommendation.
For systems with total dry film thickness of less than 200 microns, adhesion test shall be crosscut test in
accordance with ISO 2409 and acceptance result shall be No. 0 as a minimum or as per specified value
in Appendix 2.
For systems with total dry film thickness of 200 microns and above, adhesion test shall be pull-off test in
accordance with ISO 4624 and acceptance result shall be > 3 Mpa minimum for external coating and 4
Mpa for internal coating or as per specified value in Appendix 2 when tested with a mechanical
apparatus acceptance result shall be > 5 Mpa minimum or as per specified value in Appendix 2 if tested
with a pneumatic or hydraulic apparatus.
The porosity of the coating shall be checked across the entire surface using a wet sponge or an electrical
brush in accordance with painting system instruction. No arcing at the voltages specified in the painting
system data sheet shall be permitted.
The porosity of the coating shall be test in accordance with the requirement in ASTM D5162.
The Inspector shall mark the position of the defect to locate the repair to be made.
All porosity shall be repaired. Where the number of pores is more than 3 per m2, the part examined shall
be entirely re-prepared and recoated in compliance with this specification.
All result of the above mentioned tests shall be recorded in painting daily report as per APPENDIX 7.
(1) One-month minimum before work commences; all the chosen systems shall be applied (graded) on
representative elements of the structure. The paint materials used shall be taken from the same
batches as those intended for the structure.
(2) The system shall be applied in the presence of the Supplier of the paint materials and the
Contractor’s representative. Application shall be performed by the painting specialist who will be
responsible for application during work.
(3) A pre-operational technical meeting shall be organized by the Vendor in the presence of the
Contractor and the Paint Manufacturer to analyze all the details concerning performance of the work,
and the application and inspection principles.
