1. Range of application
This standard
- is valid for twin-shaft Aerzen positive displacement machines
- shows the result from experience for decades in installation and operation of Aerzen products.

2. Task of the standard

This standard in combination with the VDI-guideline 3836 is an addition to the international standard for
single-shaft machines DIN ISO 10816-3 in order to provide information on measurement and rating of
vibrations of twin screw compressors and positive displacement blowers (roots blowers).
Due to the cyclic working method of the rotating rotors the vibration behaviour of positive displacement
machines is intermediate between that of reciprocating piston compressors and of turbo compressors.
Therefore the application of the DIN ISO 10816 on positive displacement machines is inadmissible and
excluded in the standard.

3. Vibration rating and standard values of admissible vibration velocities

The stated limiting values for vibration velocities are standard values and are by themselves not sufficient for
the evaluation of the operational reliability of the machines. The operational reliability of vibrating machine
parts is influenced by load factors consisting of frequency and amplitude of the vibration and the base load
due to the operating condition as well as by the fatigue strength characteristic values of the used materials
and the constructive design. From our experiences a good long-time operational reliability is achieved when
keeping the vibration values as stated in chapters 3.1 to 3.3. For the evaluation of the acceptability of a
vibration it is decisive that no functional- or safety-relevant damages will occur.

In individual cases a structural strength analysis can be issued optional at extra costs.

3.1 Standard values for effective vibration velocities of blower- and screw compressor-stages
Table 1 of VDI 3836 quotes recommended limit values for casing vibrations as effective values of the
vibration velocity. Four groups of machines are distinguished:
Group 1: Twin screw compressors with friction bearings and timing gears and with P ≥ 55 kW
( VR )
Group 2: Twin screw compressors with roller bearings or roller- and friction bearings and
timing gears and with P ≥ 37 kW
( VM, VML )
Group 3: Twin screw compressors without timing gears and with P ≥ 55 kW
( VMX, VMY )
Group 4: Roots blowers with roller bearings and with P ≥ 22 kW
( all Aerzener types of positive displacement blowers )
VDI 3836 has to be applied to all Aerzen positive displacement machines that can be classified into one of
the above groups. For all other machines chapters 3.1 to 3.3 of this standard are valid.

3.2 Standard values for admissible effective vibration velocities of

blower- and screw compressor-stages with low power input (not covered by VDI 3836)
Zone I (normal) : up to 11 mm/s
Zone II (usable) : 12...18 mm/s (alarm)
Zone III (inadmissible) : from 18 mm/s (trip)
Measuring position : side plate, in the area of the radial rotor bearing seats
direction : radial

3.3 Standard values for admissible effective vibration velocities of accessories

(not covered by VDI 3836)
Zone I (normal) : up to 29 mm/s
Zone II (usable) : 30...60 mm/s (alarm)
Zone III (inadmissible) : 50...100 mm/s (trip)
Measuring position : external surfaces, in the area of the fixing places
direction : radial

Remark:
In order to isolate the ambiance from free forces, our base frames are generally installed on flexible mounts.
Due to the insulation effect the forces transmitted to the ambiance are low. However, excited by free forces
created from the stages and due to the soft installation, the positive displacement machines and their
components execute forced vibrations. In particular the accessories (e.g. base frame, supports, pipings,
silencer, ...) may locally reach vibration velocities far above the standard values.
