Word Count Guidance

1. Footnotes are excluded as long as they contain only citations (including

the names of cases and legislation) and source references. If you put
explanations/text in a footnote, the words are counted.

2. Tables of cases/legislation/reports and the bibliography do not count

towards the word limit.

3. An index of contents page does not count towards the word limit (and is
not needed or expected).

4. An introduction is included in the word count.

5. All words in the body of your work are counted, including case and
legislation names are included in the word count so that ‘Alpha v Beta’
counts as three words.

6. You may exceed the word count by up to 5% of the word limit without
incurring any penalty.

7. If you exceed the word limit by more than 5% but no more than 10%
you will be marked down by one level, e.g., a High Commendation will
be marked down to a Mid Commendation. A Low Pass will become a
Marginal Fail.

8. If you exceed the word limit by more than 10% the maximum grade
you can achieve is a Low Pass. A Low Pass will become a Mid Fail.
