In this introductory level class, students will use their imaginations and creativity to develop artwork and
learn how to properly use tools, techniques and processes associated with each medium. Emphasis will
be placed on the elements of design – color, line, form, shape, space, texture and value. Students will
also learn associated art vocabulary and key components of the critiquing process.

Learning in the art room happens mostly during the process, not the final outcome of the project. You will EARN
grades based upon your learning and application of techniques and mediums, problem solving skills,
time on task, overall effort in the classroom and reflection on your process. Project grades will be
based upon a rubric that consists of five components, worth up to 20 points each, for a total of
100 points. You will also earn grades for practicing techniques, working with mediums, critiques,
work studies and other classroom assessments. You will also have the opportunity to earn extra
credit throughout the semester. Look for details!
Every other week in class we will discuss an element of art. You will be assigned a work study and turn it in for
30 points. These will be completed outside of class time. Do not wait until the last minute to complete these. The
final work study should contain a creative solution to the given element and should fill the entire page. You should
spend at least 1-2 hours outside of class working on these. As with projects, late work will be penalized 5 points
for everyday it is late. If you are absent the day it is due, you will still be responsible for turning it in upon your re-
turn, as you will typically have two weeks to complete it.
Students are generally given 2 weeks to complete projects in class. Late work will be penalized 5 points for every-
day it is late. If a student is absent the day a long-term assignment is due, he/she will be required to
turn the assignment in within one day of his/her return to school for every day he/she has an excused
absence. It is often very difficult for a student to make up missed work during an art class; therefore, a
student may be asked to take a project home to work on it if possible, come in during study hall or stay after
school so that he/she will not fall further behind in class.
