In the meantime, Duston Price, a former wine consultant and now bever-
age manager for the regional Eat With Us Restaurant Group, and Emily Rogers
of Rook’s Wine Cellar in Columbus share a few thoughts that may help get you
through the season.
“When I think of the holidays, I tend to lead more with red wines; things like
Zinfandel, Cabernet or a nice French Bordeaux go well with cooler weather,” said
1 Price, who lives in the New Hope community and works at Harvey’s in Starkville.
“If you’re feeling adventurous, a Spanish Rioja or Italian Barolo are also some of
my favorites for the holidays. If you’re doing a white, I suggest a big, buttery, oaky
Chardonnay, something from Napa Valley.”
Rogers said, “If you’re going to have heavier meals — like turkey and dressing
— usually go with heavier wine, usually a drier wine. And the sweeter (the food)
is, you’re usually going to find it’s better with a lighter, sweeter wine.”
One of Rogers’ main pointers is to pay attention to the weather.
11 12 “In colder weather, the heavier wines are warming, almost like liquor,” she
explained.
When it comes to a gift for the holiday host or hostess, a good bottle of wine is
a popular choice, but selecting it can feel like a challenge. If you don’t know the
recipient’s personal preferences, a blend may be the right choice, Rogers suggest-
ed.
Price’s recommendation for a host’s thank you gift is a Pinot Noir. It’s perhaps
the world’s most popular light- to medium-bodied red wine, enjoyed for its fruit,
flower and spice aromas.
“It’s the best varietal because that’s the one that pleases the most people,” he
said.
Whatever the choice, the purchase needn’t break the bank. “You can get an ex-
cellent (bottle of) wine for $30,” Price noted. “You can get a really excellent wine
for $50, but I think $30 is perfect to spend on a gift of wine.”
For the party host needing to fill guests’ glasses, Price recommended purchas-
ing a case of white and a case of red. “I would get a Chardonnay and a Pinot Noir
that runs about $15 to $20 a bottle,” he said.
“And don’t forget that champagne is the most important thing to drink around

the holidays,” he added. “But in order to be champagne, it has to be from Cham-
pagne, France, because otherwise it’s sparkling wine — and that just isn’t the
same.”
