BRANCH CIRCUIT COMPUTED LOAD

SINGLE FAMILY DWELLING

o Type of Service: 230 volts
o Single Phase
o Line to line system

Problem: A single family dwelling is to be circuited with the following requirements:

a. Size of the branch circuit
b. Size of the conduit or pipes
c. Size of the circuit breaker protective device

Solution:

A. Circuit # 1: For Lighting Circuit Load

1. Lighting Outlet – 11 outlets x 100 watts/outlet = 1100 watts

2. Determine the total current load

Current = Power = 1100 w = 5 amperes

Voltage 220 v
Or
I=P/V
3. Determine the size of conductor and conduit

Use 2# 1.6mm - #14 TW wire in 15mm – ½”PVC Pipe

4. Determine the size or rating of circuit breaker

Use 15 Amperes, 2 poles, 220 volts, 60 HZ

B. Circuit # 2.: For Small Appliances/Convenience Outlet Circuit

1. Convenience Outlet – 9 outlets x 200 watts/outlet = 1800 watts

2. Determine the total current load

Current = Power = 1800 w = 8.18 amperes

Voltage 220 v
Or
I=P/V
3. Determine the size of conductor and conduit

Use 2# 3.0 mm - #12 TW wire in 15mm- 1/2”PVC Pipe

4. Determine the size or rating of circuit breaker

Use 20 Amperes, 2 poles, 220 volts, 60 HZ

C. Circuit # 3 ad 4: For Air-conditioning Unit – 1 HP, 8 amperes, 220 v, window type

1. 2 units – 1 HP( Horse Power) – ACU, 8 A , 220 V, window type

Power = Voltage x Current or P=VxI

Power = 220 v x 2 units(8amperes)
Power= 220 v x 16 a
Power = 3520 watts

2. Determine the total current load

Current = Power = 3520 w = 16 amperes

Voltage 220 v
Or
I=P/V

Note: Branch circuit conductor supplying a motor shall have an ampacity not less than
125% of the full load current.

Current= ( 16 amperes) (125%)

Current = (16) (1.25)
Current = 20 amperes
3. Determine the size of conductor and conduit
Use 2# 3.2 mm - #10 TW wire in 15mm- 1/2”PVC Pipe
4. Determine the size or rating of circuit breaker

Use 2 sets - 30 Amperes, 2 poles, 220 volts, 60 HZ

D. Circuit # 5: For Electric Range

1. One Unit – Electric Range - 2 burners – 1.5 kilowatts each

Power = 1500 watts x 2 burners = 3000 watts

2. Determine the total current load

Current = Power = 3000 w = 13.63 amperes

Voltage 220 v
Or
I=P/V
3. Determine the size of conductor and conduit
Use 2# 2.6 mm - #10 TW wire in 15mm- 1/2”PVC Pipe
4. Determine the size or rating of circuit breaker

Use 1 set - 30 Amperes, 2 poles, 220 volts, 60 HZ

E. For Service Entrance Conductor and the Main Disconnecting Means

1. Find the total power load:

Lighting Load……………………………………………….1100 watts
Small Appliances/ C.O………………………………….1800 watts
Other Loads………………………………………………….3000 watts
Total Loads…………………………………………………..5900 watts

Application for Demand Factor (100%)

For first 3000 watts at 100% DF………..3000 watts
5900 watts – 3000 watts……….2900 watts
For Other Load (40%)
2900 watts x 40 %....................1160 watts
For air-conditioning unit at 100% DF
3520 watts x 100 %...................3520 watts
Total Computed Load…………………………………… 10580 watts

2. Find the total computed current load:

Current = Power = 10580 w = 48.09 amperes

Voltage 220 v
Or
I=P/V
3. Determine the size of main feeder conductor

Use 2# 14 mm - #6 THW wire in 25mm- 1” diameter - RSCP Pipe

4. Determine the size of the main feeder circuit breaker
` Use 1 set - 100 Amperes trip 2 wires, 250 volts, 60 HZ, 2 poles molded circuit
breaker
