Topic: Waking Dragons Story Synthesis Grade: 1

Learning Goal(s)
 Students will be able to write about processes and sequences that take place on a
day to day basis
 Students will be able to create creative stories using non-human characters with
human characteristics
Standards
 CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.1.3
Write narratives in which they recount two or more appropriately sequenced
events, include some details regarding what happened, use temporal words to
signal event order, and provide some sense of closure.

Materials & Resources Needed:


 White Board
 Waking Dragon Book
 Writers’ Journals
 Pencil
 Eraser
Modifications and Accommodations:
Have students work in larger groups for sharing or work in partners before and after
independent reading in order to form ideas and collaborate. Allow students to draw
pictures to accompany their stories if they finish their story early or if they think it would
help them come up with more ideas. Emphasize the lack of necessity for spelling and
grammar at this point.

Extension idea: Go back and edit. Go through and find one thing you would like to
change. you may draw a star next to this point in the story and change what you like at
the end (model this).

 Pay special attention to what the characters are doing and what makes them
unique
 Keep an ear out for actions that feel familiar

Model
 Read “Waking Dragons”
 After reading, choose a character that is not a human and a human routine (ex. A
frog making pancakes for breakfast).
 Go through steps for making pancakes one by one, listing on front board.

Create a story together


 Students suggest a character and a routine.
 Ask students to list steps for the routine.
 Write a paragraph together listing the actions the character takes to complete the
routine.

Write
 Students write for 15-20 minutes writing about their character completing the
routine.
 Playing music will help focus (classical and quietly).
 Walk around and check on writing.

 Find a partner to share stories with.


 Offer 2 things you liked and 2 suggestions to change or add on.
 Establish expectations for listening and being respectful to peers.
 Ask if anyone would like to share their story to the entire class.
