Course Description
This course will prepare health care professionals to manage projects within their own area and across disciplines. The course will
identify the skills and competencies of an effective project manager. The students will develop a major project using project
management software specific to health project management for clinical research, health information, and health care quality
management.

Course Outcomes
Successful completion of this course will enable the student to:

1. Describe the elements of the project management lifecycle (initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and
closing)
2. Describe different project management methodologies
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of projects and project management to the realization of an organization’s
objectives
4. Describe the unique complexities that often accompany projects in the health care industry.
5. Utilize effective project planning tools, techniques and concepts
6. Understand the importance of an effective project team
7. Work effectively together in heterogeneous groups to accomplish tasks at required standards and within assigned timelines

Unit Outcomes
Successful completion of the following units will enable the student to:
1.0 The project management lifecycle
1.1 Describe the key elements of each phase of project management (initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and
controlling, and closing)
1.2 Identify the importance of each phase of the project management lifecycle and its importance to effectively manage
projects
1.3 Describe the activities and deliverables associated with each phase of project management
1.4 Carry-out a project from beginning to end while maintaining best practices
1.5 Describe the importance of fully completing each phase of the project management lifecycle and performing regular
project status updates
1.6 Describe the typical deliverables for a project manager, including time, cost, scope, resources, risk and quality
1.7 Use best practices during each phase of a project, including receiving sign-offs and appropriate approvals
2.0 Project management methods
2.1 Compare different methodologies, including agile, iterative, waterfall, and incremental project management
methodologies
2.2 Utilize different project management approaches and explain the difference between project management
approaches
3.0 Realizing organizational objectives
3.1 Identify the need for project management
3.2 Define key project management terms
3.3 Explain the need to prioritize projects and understand the impact of constraints and the need for trade-offs
3.4 Identify the importance of aligning projects with an organization’s objectives, vision and/or mission
3.5 Describe the importance of customer satisfaction when completing a project and meeting project goals
3.6 Demonstrate the purpose of a project, the “why” of a project and learn how to ask the right questions
4.0 Projects in Healthcare
4.1 Describe the challenges of project funding within the health care industry
4.2 Identify the complexities of managing projects within the health care industry
4.3 Identify the importance of the politics involved in health care projects and managing expectations of internal and
external stakeholders
4.4 Explain the interplay of different Municipal, Provincial, and Federal regulatory bodies, legislation, and standards and
the potential impact on health care projects
4.5 Describe the importance for achieving project buy-in from key stakeholders.
4.6 Describe strategies for achieving project buy-in, and its importance.
5.0 Project planning tools, techniques and concepts
5.1 Create a project charter and understand the importance of each elements of a project charter
5.2 Describe the importance of creating a project management plan in conjunction with a project charter
5.3 Develop and use a project management plan
5.4 Define a project's scope and develop strategies to mitigate scope creep
5.5 Create work breakdown structures
5.6 Prepare project schedules using a variety of techniques, such as Gantt charts, activity lists and milestone lists
5.7 Create project logic models and calculate the critical path of a project
5.8 Use critical path analysis to make schedule trade-offs, and use add in feeder buffer when appropriate.
5.9 Determine the return on investment (ROI) for a project
5.10 Determine the type of return on investment (ROI) for a project
5.11 Develop a project communication plan
5.12 Develop a project risk management plan and risk management strategies
5.13 Utilize a project change log, issue log, and project control form
5.14 Demonstrate proficiency in using project management software
6.0 Effective project teams
6.1 Describe the complexities of creating an effective project team within the health care setting
6.2 Compare different personality types and the effect on the project team
6.3 Implement human resources strategies to effectively manage the project team and stakeholders
6.4 Describe the importance of leadership, motivation and teamwork
6.5 Apply various approaches to the acquisition, motivation, and team development of project staff
6.6 Describe the flow of a project team (forming, storming, norming, performing and adjournment)
6.7 Create a R.A.C.I chart for the project team
6.8 Identify different communication styles within the project team and how to effectively communicate with all team
members

Evaluation
The minimum passing grade for this course is 60 (C).
In order to successfully complete this course, the student is required to meet the following evaluation criteria:
