5. Abstract;
Material fatigue is a phenomenon where structures fail when subjected to a cyclic load.
Fatigue is the most common source behind failures of mechanical structures. Surgical
implants are exposed to severe working conditions and therefore a wide range of failure
mechanisms may occur, including fatigue, corrosion, wear, fretting and combinations of
them.
The biomechanics of a plate fixation are determined first by its loading conditions
second by its configuration and third by the response of the bone to the fixation.
The S-N curve describes the relation between cyclic stress amplitude and number of cycles
to failure .The life estimation of Femur Bone plate made of different materials will be
carried out using S-N curves for different loading conditions. As the plate is subjected to
cyclic loading between a maximum load and no load, the stress was not fully reversed and
the effect of mean stress becomes significant in the calculation of the fatigue life. This
calculation includes factors such as maximum stress, stress amplitude, mean stress, equivalent
stress, with the values of the equivalent stress amplitude, the number of cycles to failure will
be evaluated from the fatigue curves. After obtaining the number of cycles to failure, the
fatigue life can be expressed as number of days divided by loading cycles per day.
Fatigue failure:
• Fatigue failure is defined as the tendency of a material to fracture by means of
progressive brittle cracking under repeated alternating or cyclic stresses of an
intensity considerably below the normal strength.
• All structures and mechanical components that are cyclically loaded can fail by
fatigue.
• Fundamental requirements during design and manufacturing to avoid fatigue failure
are different for each different case and should be considered during the design phase.
• The stress-life (S-N method), is commonly referred to as the total life method since it
makes no distinction between initiating or growing a crack. This was the first fatigue
analysis method to be developed over 100 years ago

TITLE: Computational Investigations of Mechanical Failures of Internal Plate
Fixation
YEAR:2009
RESEARCH FINDINGS: The results demonstrated the importance of the screw
positioning for the loading of the plate. The paper concludes that the rigid fixation
method resulted in serious stress concentrations in the plate, which induced fatigue
failure. The flexible fixation gave sufficient stability and was better for fracture
healing.

TITLE: Numerical Analysis of Fractured Femur Bone with prosthetic Bone Plates
YEAR:2013
RESEARH FINDINGS: The material having the less effect of stress due to loading is
found out. . Bone plates are surgical tools, which are used to assist in the
healing of broken and fractured bones. The breaks are first set and then held in
place using bone plates in situations where casts cannot be applied to the injured
area. Bone plates are often applied to fractures occurring to facial areas such
the nose, jaw or eye sockets. Repairs like this fall into an area of medicine
known as osteosynthesis.

TITLE: Mechanical Strength Evaluation Analysis of Stainless Steel and Titanium
Locking Plate forFemur Bone Fracture
YEAR2012
Stainless Steel and Titanium .Through this static loading condition and material
comparison analysis we have found out the Titanium Implant mechanical properties is
better than Stainless Steel. The purpose of this work is to investigate the alternative
materials for human Orthopedic Implants which is Bio-Compatible. These implants
are expected to be Bio-Compatible & they should not cause inflammation or
rejection. An improved understanding of the mechanical parameters on different
alternative materials used for implants.
