Values Learned in LIWORIZ

Journal Entry #1 – March 5, 2019

The Rizalistas

In our class, we watched a documentary about group of people in who

follows and worships. Just like the Catholic Church, they also have prayers, rituals, and

occasions wherein they practice everyday. The Rizalistas consider Jose Rizal as Kristong

Tagalog, for he saved the country from the oppression of the Spanish colonizers. These

people greatly love Rizal that they see resemblances between Jesus and Jose Rizal.

After watching the whole documentary, I learned that I was not really aware

of the things related to our national hero. It was only during that day that I learned there

was a religious group of people who considers Rizal as God and who deeply adores him. I

realized that maybe the similarities and resemblances of Rizal and God is due to Rizal’s

upbringing, he was raised by her mother as a religious person and instilled in his mind the

teachings of Christ.

Ang buhay ni Jose Rizal

Since it was an online class, our professor gave us a task to watch

documentaries that shared about Jose Rizal’s life as a son, lover, friend, and a schoolboy.

I learned that before he became our national hero, he lived like a normal man. He enjoyed

his lifetime without forgetting our country. In this I learned that anyone plain or ordinary

can be a hero as long as your love for the country ignites and inspires you to fight and stand

for it. I also learned that despite of the people bringing you down, you must continue to

grow and show them the best you can be, just like Rizal, back in his college days, he proved

to his classmates that he can excel. I realized that nothing can dissever the strong bond of

friendships and their love for one another. And lastly, I learned that setting aside your love

for someone to save your country shows how deeply he loved our country and how eager

he was is to free us from the colonizers. This act shows a true essence of nationalism, and

this should what each of us must possess.

The Filipinos and Chinese

It was discussed in our class the differences between Filipinos and Chinese.

As we all know, Chinese or Chinese-Filipino citizens contributed greatly in our economic

and industrial growth. The Chinese people are known to be hard-working. Starting from

selling in small stores up to building big malls and other businesses. And unfortunately,

some of the Filipinos are their opposites. Some of the Filipinos prefer to be dependent to

other people, instead of working hard to achieve or solve problems.

I learned if we aim to become successful we strive and work hard more and

not always complain in every struggles that we face but instead look or simple ways

wherein you can help or contribute for the betterment of the country.

Little Bad Boy

During this session, we had our quiz wherein we needed to write a reflection

or reaction paper about the documentary about Rizal’s life in Europe. In the video, it can

be seen where Rizal lived during his days in Europe. It was also shared in the video the

vices and adventures of Rizal as a young man. It was also revealed the organization Rizal

and his friends created and the people he worked with and where he studied.

The one that really caught my attention and what I wrote in my reflection was

Rizal’s drive to study and learn about ophthalmology in order to help her blind mother.

The values that I learned in that video was hard love and dedication. His drive inspired me

that I can do anything beyond measures just to take care and help my loved ones. His

dedication portrayed that love drives people to do anything for their family and loved ones.

There was also a foreigner who made me realized that I was not as proud as him of Jose

Rizal, being our national hero. It saddened me to know that instead of Rizal’s fellow

countrymen, a foreigner who was moved by his great works is fighting and continuing to

spread knowledge about Rizal’s life and works not only to Filipinos but also to other races.

Rizal in Ateneo

During this discussion, I learned that Rizal showcased his best despite the

negative remarks about him by the people around him during his study in Ateneo. Our

professor also shared about the teachings of the Jesuits and the lessons Rizal learned from

them. Just like how Rizal proved to his classmates that he can reach and surpass the

standards of his Spanish classmates, we Filipinos must also worked hard to show to other

people who look down to us that despite of being not equally given of opportunities, we

can still excel in many aspects of life. As long as we believe in ourselves, we must continue

to fight for our dreams and never be influenced by the negativity that people try to instill

to us. We must also be responsible and compassionate towards our own countrymen in

order for us not to only grow and develop individually but also as a nation. We must never

forget to help and inspire other Filipinos to also work hard for their dreams and goals in

life. As one nation, we must carry each other’s burdens in order for all of us to stand firm

and be united.
