with critical emergency responses in Strathmore and
Wheatland County.
On Feb. 6, a Canadian Red Cross emergency man-
agement volunteer information session is being held
in Strathmore.
According to Jag Dhawan, emergency management
coordinator with the Canadian Red Cross, emergency
services want to step up the recruitment of trained
volunteers.
“The Town of Strathmore as well as a representa-
tive from Wheatland County and Canadian Red Cross
came together around the table to brainstorm, that in
the event of a large-scale disaster, an example would
be a snowstorm blocking the highway where servic-
es cannot be deployed from outside the region, how
we can focus on building trained volunteer capacity
within the region,” said Dhawan.
The Canadian Red Cross along with local authori-
ties work together to train and guide volunteers on
how to safely provide vital services to people affect-
ed by an emergency or a disaster – either large or
small.
“There are many community members who want
to step up; they have time, they have the desire. This
information session is an opportunity to give them
that path, and the resources and tools,” said Dhawan.
In an emergency, the Canadian Red Cross directly
collaborates with the municipal emergency agencies,
such as the fire department which is the agency first
on the scene. “They (fire department) know what
families are going through and they call the Red
Cross,” noted Dhawan. “From there, we activate our
trained volunteers in that region so they can go to
the scene and help families.”
In the Strathmore area, “we are formally working
with Strathmore Victim Services, the fire department
and Family and Community Support Services – all

On Feb. 15, the Strathmore Musical Arts Society will present
their third concert of the season, showcasing country music
artist Michela Sheedy, with opening act Two Late to the Party.
Born and raised in Okotoks, Sheedy has brought her soul-
ful country style to numerous venues like Country Thunder,
Big Valley Jamboree, and the Coca-Cola Stage and Nashville
North at the Calgary Stampede. She was named Notable Life’s
Breakout Canadian Musician of the Year in 2018, winner of
96.5 CKFM Country Star Search, grand prize winner of the
Global Country Star Search and has been nominated twice for
the ACMA Female Artist of the Year.
Sheedy sings the national anthem at Calgary Flames home
games, has been the opening act for Aaron Goodvin and Lon-
estar, and has been a finalist in the Calgary Stampede Talent

Strathmore’s Leroy Wolf Collar has
published his first book, First Nations
Self-Government, through Brush Edu-
cation, Inc., and he held the official
launch on Jan. 24 in Siksika.
Wolf Collar, a former chief and coun-
cillor with Siksika Nation, grew up in
Siksika. As both a former resident and
long-time government offi-
cial, he says he saw systemic
and cyclical issues in their
government.
He has a Bachelor of Arts
in Native Studies and is
looking to begin his Master’s
this fall.
“This book is written from
my own personal experi-
ence and perspective,” he
said. “Some people might
not agree or might not like
it. First Nations leaders with-
in our communities need to refocus,
rethink and rebuild their community’s
leadership, management and gover-
nance in order to improve the quality
of life for the people they serve.”
A moment that changed everything
was during a 2009 treaty conference
Wolf Collar attended. The late Jim
Sinclair, a Cree elder and leader from
Saskatchewan, took the stage and said
something Wolf Collar took to heart.

gatherings for many years, and you
chiefs, you come to these conferences
and you talk about being sovereign
leaders representing sovereign nations,

and official opposition certainly have a
difference of opinion over this particu-
lar initiative, and I expect the debate
over these tax rates to continue.
However, there is another factor in
economic growth that too often goes
ignored: productivity. While you can
grow the economy solely by increasing
the size of the workforce, only strong
productivity growth can increase per
capita GDP and incomes.
This isn’t exactly news to the busi-
ness community, which has been beg-
ging government to reduce the unnec-
essary, bureaucratic red tape that is

In England, three people die every day waiting for
an organ donation because there are not enough or-
gans available for transplant. Changes are coming in
that country soon. In the Spring of 2020, all adults
in England are considered to have agreed to be an
organ donor when they die unless they have record-
ed a decision not to donate. This change should help
increase the organs available.
Washing chicken before cooking is not a good idea.
It can increase the risk of spreading bacteria into the
sink and around the kitchen. Drying the chicken
pieces with a paper towel is sufficient. And immedi-
ately after handling the chicken or any raw meat, it is
important to wash your hands thoroughly for at least
20 seconds as well as cutting boards and utensils.
Health Canada has put out a health advisory about
needle-free dermal filler devices used for cosmetic
skin treatments. These devices are advertised on-
line to reduce wrinkles and increasing lip volume
but they could pose health risks to the user. None
of these devices have been authorized by Health
Canada as being safe and may cause inflammatory
skin reactions, abscesses, staining of the skin and he-
matoma (collection of blood outside a blood vessel).
Don’t use these devices.

glare. This is especially true in snowy conditions.

effective at protecting the eyes in both summer and

Strathmore steps up
for Operation
Christmas Child

Canadians are a generous people,
and folks from Strathmore and area
prove that time and again.
During the 2019 Operation Christmas
Child shoebox campaign that recent-
ly ended, Canadians packed 490,471
shoeboxes with toys, hygiene items,
school supplies, and many other items.
A total of 419 shoe boxes from Strath-
more were donated to the charity, to
add to the 105,864 shoeboxes from Al-
berta, an amount second only to On-
tario.
Distribution of the shoeboxes in the
developing world has already begun.
During the next few weeks, children in
Central America and western Africa will
be receiving shoeboxes.
The 490,471 boxes donated in 2019 –
including 12,098 packed online at Pack-
