Introduction
Integrated Rural Development is a programme concept
that covers the majority of our activities. It means that we
assist rural communities in making sustainable improvements
in living conditions in all aspects of daily life that may include
agricultural development , social and economical problems.
Objectives And Aim Of Rural Development
• The basic objectives of rural development programme have been
alleviation of poverty and unemployment through creating basic
social and economic infrastructure, training to rural unemployed
youth and to provide employment to marginal farmers/labourers, so
as to discourage seasonal and permanent migration to urban areas.
Some major issues faced by the Rural
Masses
• Educational facilities
• Health services
• Clean water
• Food
• Unemployment
• Katchi abadies
• Poverty
• Environmental problems
• Crime
• Health and Nutrition
• Poor health, malnutrition, and high family growth-rates are observed
in rural areas.
• Water supply and sanitation condition is not satisfactory in rural
areas. Population having access to safe water is 87 percent and 35
percent of total population has access to sanitation
• Employment Opportunities
• • Due to lack of intensification and diversification of agriculture
sector, on-farm (agribusiness) and non-farm
entrepreneurship/self-employment opportunities are limited and
becoming scarce day by day. Unemployment is increasing.
• Lack of Recreational Facilities
• Youth do not find ample facilities to be involved in healthy activities
at leisure. Un-healthy hobbies to spend free time may attract them.
• Women Farmers and Youth
• Although the Women are the part of active labour force in the rural
areas, yet they suffer the most because of
illiteracy, poor nutrition, poor health, high birthrates and
unacknowledged labour.
• Natural Resources
• • The natural resources base is deteriorating due to burgeoning
population
• pressure, inappropriate agricultural practices, overstocking and
deforestation.
• • The rangelands on which 70% of local livestock thrives have been
degraded and no rehabilitation plans are in place.
• High Illiteracy Rate
• • In rural areas literacy rate is low and illiterate farmers cannot
realize the benefits of modern, scientific and technical know-how in
farming business.
Strategies of Rural Development
• It is argued that sustainable agriculture is the main vehicle for rural
development and the rural development will not take place unless we
view rural more than farmers.
• Basic Elements of Rural Development
• The basic necessities include food, cloth, shelter, basic literacy, primary
health care and security of life and property. When any one or all of
them was absent or in critically short supply, we may state that a
condition of absolute under development exists.
Steps involved in Integrated Rural Development
• Phase I - Awareness building.
• Phase II - Design and preparation of pilot projects.
• Phase III: Implementation of the pilot protects.
• Phase IV - Programme development, replication and expansion.
