through effectively managing technical & personal performance.

The opportunity
An opportunity exists within the production operations department at Eggborough power
station for an assistant shift charge engineer. The post holder will be expected to assist
the shift charge engineer in leading the shift operations team, ensuring an integrated and
focused response to the station’s customers whilst ensuring that the station is run in line
with safety, environmental and engineering guidelines.
The role forms part of the shift team controlling the operation of four flexible 500MW coal
fired units to enable station production and commercial (EFOR & TEMP) targets to be
met in a safe and efficient manner. The activities and responsibilities of the role will be
developed to suit the needs of the business in line with the objectives of the
organisation. The role will provide an individual with the opportunity to develop within the
operations section, the Eggborough business and the BE group.

Key responsibilities: -
Reporting to one of the shift charge engineers, the post holders responsibilities and
duties will include: -

co-ordinating team activities & resources, ensuring that all activities are carried out
with full regard to statutory regulations, directives, procedures, safety rules and site
(IPC) authorisation

ensuring that team resources, processes and activities are managed to maintain the
effective commercial operation of the station, whilst optimising thermal performance
within the applicable operating regime

maintaining an effective working relationship with BEPET and a commercially sound


interface with National Grid
providing support for the preparation of business plans, working with other teams to
progress engineering solutions to plant & safety issues in line with allocated plant audit
areas

ensuring routine testing is completed to appropriate schedules and recorded

investigating and diagnosing plant faults, instigating repairs, maintaining effective


communications between all teams in the resource management of the station

ensuring that standards of housekeeping are maintained, participating in and


reporting on safety tours

participating in the station emergency plan arrangements and also as incident


controller, if required

understanding the existing plant status and the expected plant operating
requirements on taking over the shift and ensuring this information is disseminated to
subordinate staff

writing the station log and ensuring that incidents and major plant changes are
recorded and reported and the following shifts have sufficient information on the plant
status and operating requirements

dealing with queries and complaints from the general public

undertaking duties of safety controller in accordance with the Eggborough Power Ltd
system safety rules and assist in planning and co-ordination of outages to ensure they
run to schedule

Candidates should demonstrate and possess: -

high degree of self-motivation and direction

technical and plant knowledge at the appropriate level

proven flexibility and adaptability

ability to work as part of an effective leadership team managing and prioritising a high
work load

reasonable IT and administrative skills

proven ability to produce quality work and effective communication skills


a real desire to develop within the post Candidates should possess qualifications to
HNC level or equivalent in an electrical or mechanical discipline and ideally be qualified
to degree standard. They should also demonstrate leadership skills or potential, with the
commitment to undertake a leadership qualification. Additionally a working knowledge of
ISO 14001 is considered essential and a good knowledge of operator asset care and
quality standards would be an added advantage. The successful candidate will be
appointed at the appropriate grade within the Eggborough Power Ltd Agreement, within
a basic salary scale of £30314 - £36023 together with a shift allowance of £8261 (pay
award and operations opportunity review outcome pending). The starting salary for this
appointment will be within this range dependant on the successful candidate’s existing
salary, competence, experience and qualifications. Overtime is offered as determined by
the business need and will be paid in addition to the quoted basic pay and shift
allowance above. New entrant benefits include a final salary pension scheme and
