Arabbitry, and a move!
Posted on August 14, 2013 by Mss M
With moving day imminent, we had to build a whole new rabbitry!
‘At my uncle's house, we had very limited space in which to build. We maximized the space by building a two-
level rabbitry, with corrugated metal waste chutes and gutters. Posts on the original rabbitry are here and here.
‘A year and a hal later, we ended up refurbishing it with flat plastic chutes and vinyl gutters. This was much
‘easier to deal with, and didn't rust
Not even a year later, we were moving!
But we were moving to two acres... no HOA, no restrictions to speak of, nothing. We could build whatever kind,
of rabbitry we wanted. So what did we want?
Well, being a member of RabbitTalk, I had seen a lot of different rabbitry setups. We looked through the
galleries, and finally decided to build a single-level rabbitry, and just let the waste fall to the floor. Eventually,
\we would add chickens to the rabbitry, and we would put down a deep bed of shavings, and the chickens would
keep everything tumed, eat the bugs, and slowy compost the shavings and the waste.
This needs to be shoveled out and redone twice a year, at the most.
With the decision made, we bought the materials and started building as quickly as possible. With Shay
working, and us stilling almost an hour away, this was tricky, but it had to be done.

First of course, we had to set al of the poss, including one extra forthe second side
ofthe doorway.
We put the quick-setting concrete mix in dry. This was a tip given us some 20+ years ago, when we were
building our screened porch in Delaware. We put a few inches in the bottom, tamp it with the post, pour more
‘around the post, and plunge a digging bar into it repeatedly to compact it. When the hole was filed, we gave
the top a gentle watering.
The dry concrete holds your posts level, and you can continue to build. No need to wait fort to set! Over time,
the mix attracts water from the ground to set it.
We made sure each post was love! as we filled and compacted the holes. This

The kids and! got started on the pickets. We bought pickets and 2°x4"s instead of
fence panels, because it would De much stronger. we left about a 1/2° space
between pickets atthe front (sometimes a litle more, depending on the pickets), and
‘raducedit fo 1/4" atthe back, where the cages would be, Don't want wet Bunnies!
Then Shay came along wih his saw, ond cutoff the excess. The board atthe bottom
Is just a temporary spacer we would knock out when fnished.

Time to put an the rest ofthe center and bottom boards, and get the rest of the

‘As the kids and | worked to install the pickets (which we did with ringshank anc

‘The kid traded off — one held the spacer, and the other nailed the picket n place.
For the larger spaces, wo used a piece of scrap wood. Far the narrow spaces, we
used a mol square that was just the righ thickness.
‘Shay worked fo get as much as he could done on the root
The day before moving day, this Is whore we wore on the rabbit.
We figured the kids and I would have to work during the move to finish the pickets. Time to go back to my
Uncle's house and finish packina!

The next day alter furiously finishing packing asthe moving truck got packed, we
‘headed out to our now home... only to be stopped by a train
‘The movers had a bit of a challenge. We had a full houseload of furniture, and we had moved into a house that
was already full. They said they had never moved one complete household out of two combined households
before
| had expected to work on the rabbitry, but it wasn't long before | had to go inside to direct traffic. | impressed
‘on the kids that | needed for them to step up and get all of it done themselves. They did, We were so proud of
them!
Mom and | directed the movers, the kids knocked out the pickets, and Shay worked on the root,
Meamtile, he bunnies vaited in cardboard boxes with hay, while work on the
rabbitry continued,
