Hi,
I, Varun Shah, President of India Association, congratulate you on your admit to Missouri S&T.

We will be taking care of your pick up from the airport and will arrange for a temporary
accommodation for a period of one week. You will be given a tour of the University and guided
through the initial formalities such as getting your university ID, submitting your I20 with the
International Affairs, opening bank accounts and setting up your Joe’SS and MS&T mail. The
other important thing you will be doing as soon as you get here will be looking for an apartment,
please refer to the section on housing for further information on this.
We suggest you read the information sheets which must have come along with your I-20 as this
will be very helpful in clearing any doubts you have regarding the University requirements. Given
below is a list of useful information, which will come very handy.

Pick-up:

Your pickup will be arranged from St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL). Pickups are
organized by the International Affairs office at Missouri S&T starting from 19th December 2010
to 2nd January 2011. We prefer if you can plan your travel to Rolla during this time. If you have
already planned your travel outside this window, we will try making alternate arrangements.

For your pickup, kindly fill in your details here:

https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=dGIxdzNYOWlhU3JLSUpuQmJIVHVoLWc6MQ

Kindly enter ONLY final travel plans in the form (at the above link). Please DO NOT fill any
tentative information. Your pick up shuttle service will be booked soon after you fill the form.

Should your travel plans change, kindly inform us at <india@mst.edu> as soon as possible so
that we can make appropriate pick-up arrangements.

Fee Payment:
The preferred way would be to bring a Demand Draft (DD) addressed to the University from
India. You do have to be very careful with the DD during travel though. Even if you bring a DD of
extra amount, the university will reimburse the extra amount. A DD of *9000$ would be a safe
bet! If you want to pay in installments, the first one works to *2000$.
Approximate cost of taking 3 courses is around is *7900$ + *Insurance for spring and summer
semesters (700$) + TB test (260$ without insurance, 40$ with insurance) , thus approx. fees for 1
semester works out to be around 9000$.
*All figures are approximate. Please check with the University for Complete Information.

Medical Requirements:

You should have had your first MMR booster AFTER your first year of birth i.e. AFTER a
minimum of twelve months from your birth. Also, try to get a second MMR booster in
India as it involves a lot of expense here. Do carry medical certificates for the same.
*Other vaccines such as those against chicken pox and hepatitis may be taken but it isn't
a compulsory requirement, although we advise you to take the chicken pox vaccine as
there were a few outbreaks in this semester.
The TB test is mandatory but the University does NOT recognize TB tests done in India.
Medical Insurances from India are generally NOT encouraged here. The University has a
tie up Aetna Health Insurance for health & medical insurance needs. Refer ‘Fee Payment’
for fees.

*These information may change for new semesters. Kindly contact the university to be sure.

Clothing:

You are arriving during Spring, which means the temperature in Rolla would be anywhere
between –5o C and –25o C. So, be sure to carry plenty of warm clothing sufficient at least for the
first few days. Bring at least the following:
 2 woolen sweaters
 A woolen cap
 A very good jacket
 Gloves
A pair of shoes with very good grip
 Thermal wear
In case you find the clothing you bring insufficient to withstand the cold, good quality winter
clothing can be purchased once you arrive in Rolla.
Housing:

As soon as you arrive in Rolla you will be provided with a temporary accommodation for one
week. Try to look out for an apartment during that time.

Most rooms or apartments are available through an agency called Investment Realty (IR),
although there are others. Read the lease carefully before signing. If you don’t understand any
part of the lease, ask the IR officials to get things clarified. You should also take pictures of your
place as soon as you move as a proof of irregularities (if any) and mention the same on a form
which they provide as you move into your apartment. You will have one week to report any
irregularity (broken blinds, loose locks, kitchen issues, bathroom problems or any other
problem). You have to notify IR about these problems, OTHERWISE YOU MIGHT GET PENALIZED
FOR THOSE WHEN YOU LEAVE THE APARTMENT. The lease will usually be for one year, so choose
your room carefully as breaking the lease also incurs a penalty. The room rent varies according to
area and comfort of the house. The rent for a 1BHK is usually $200 to $400. The rent for a 2BHK
is usually $300-$800. These rates usually exclude the cost of utilities (gas, electricity, internet).
The rent is shared between roommates.

Living Expenses and Laptop:

The average expenses per month for a room shared by 4 people goes like this: Rent + Utilities
(gas + electricity + internet) + grocery = $250 - $400 per head (without cellphone).

Depending on the deal and configuration, you get you could be spending around $500 - $800
on a laptop. If you’re planning to buy a new laptop, we recommend you buy it here as they are
good, cheap and would save you some luggage!
